the first volume is by far the worst, but you need to read it to be able to understand where things start off. when you get into the main story it is AMAZING! i watched the anime and then went back and read it. its still ongoing and im still following it. this is a great story about independence and learning to love again.... :):):):):):)...the character depth is REALLY good! favorite manga ever.

I really love this series, I wish they continued making the anime for it! What happens is Kyoko goes to Japan with her long time friend and crush, Sho, to help and support him pursue his dream of making it big in Japan. After finding out that he was just using her, Kyoko decides to beat him at his own game by joining Show Buisness as revenge. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

For the Parents: Skip Beat has some language and in much later volumes you have a couple guys trying to cop a feel on the poor heroine (and they get soundly beaten up for it). If you don't mind either then this is a descent series to let teens add to their library. It addresses all sorts of themes as the main character faces blackmail, two-timing co-workers, impossible challenges, the trials of being an actress, oh and a vendetta against her ex-love-interest turned celebrity (whom she is determined to outshine on the stage) AND a bully super celebrity named Ren. Kyoko is an energetic, over imaginative emotional roller coaster who takes on the world and still believes in faeries. You might want to read it too to watch Kyoko goes from a plain jane nobody at a fast food joint to a star.

I thought it was a fun series at first but I'm up to now book 13 (or was it 12?), and I'm bit bored fo it now. There's just something about the main character and her cheery self that started driving me nuts. I'm cool with her determination but, she really lets people treat her like crap and that drives me crazy about her (and therefore the rest of the series).
