A quick, very funny read. Worth a place on your shelf for reading every season. This is NOT a tear-jerking tale that will warm your heart and make you weep, and it is not meant to be. I recommend it.

How a couple in small town America deals with their daughter not being home for Christmas. This unexpectedly affects their friends and neighbors as well. Very similar to the movie but there are some significant differences.

not a mystery but cute story. light reading.

I enjoy books that are light hearted...therefore, I do not typically read John Grisham. I enjoyed this book. I liked the concept of skipping Christmas (or attempting to skip Christmas and everything that is involved).

Accountant Luther Krank is a Scrooge for the new millennium. He calculates that he and his wife, Nora, can take a Caribbean cruise during Christmas for much less money than they spent during the previous year's Christmas season. But Luther doesn't just want to take a vacation during Christmas; he wants to take a vacation from Christmas and skip it altogether. This means that the Kranks will not buy a Christmas tree or calendar, put up any decorations, send any Christmas cards, give any gifts, or attend or host any parties much to the chagrin of their hyperfestive neighbors. However, an unexpected phone call at the last minute leads to a change in plans. Hilarity ensues, but the poignant conclusion is unforgettable. Grisham astutely captures the way many people spend the holiday season, from fighting the crowds to commenting on their neighbors' Christmas trees.

Small book, very quick read... and a must to read before the holidays! You will find alot of yourself in reading this book!!! Very different book by John Grisham, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it (nothing like the movie)

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was witty and funny and nothing like John Grisham.
Want to see the movie one day.

A truly hilarious look at how hard it could be to NOT celebrate Christmas. Grisham shows an entirely different side of himself here, and proves himself as adept at writing comedy as he is with suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
Helpful Score: 2
This was a wonderful book. I read it during the week of Christmas and at times thought the characters had a wonderful idea. The characters are truly tested though. Will they really be able to skip Christmas? Would you be able to? I have to admit it's fun to think about :)

Cute and funny. A very quick read. Very different than John Grishams other books. Hmm did he write this one? Laughed quite a bit with this book. Husband and wife decide to skip Christmas this year when daughter decides to go to Peru for the holidays on a Peace Corps mission. They book a cruise instead of doing the whole holiday thing. This upsets the neighborhood which is planning on winning the decorating reward again this year with their frosty on the roof of every house. Neighborhood gossip filled with silly situations makes this book the comedy that it is. It is no wonder they made this a movie, silly entertainment at it's best. I will have to go rent it now and see it. Good beach or poolside book.

I have been known to say "John Grisham can't write a bad book". This may be true in his usual genre, however, his comedic writing leaves a lot to be desired. I found myself skiming the first 3/4 of the book just to get through it. The last 1/4 picks up quite a bit and at least leaves you feeling like your time was not completelly wasted.

John Grisham is an amazing writer and this book had all the possibility of becoming a holiday favorite of mine....but it fell short. Like a modern day scrooge, the main focus of the book is "bah-humbugging" until the very end. I don't like the main character much...he's rude, selfish, and only thinks about money. It's not the skipping Christmas that was hard to relate to, it was the main character's rude and selfish behavior...his complete and utter negativity. I was really hoping for that grand finish, the turn around where he realizes what an idiot he has been. While there is a glimmer(the last chapter), I find it not worth the other 170 pages...I just wanted to hit this scrooge over the head with his preverbial cane!

I call this a "fluff" book. Its light, easy reading and I finished it in a day. Not your classic Grisham, but a cute read anyway.

Loved this book. Not Grishams usual fare, but it was funny and shows how foolish we can be at times about Christmas. ( Christmas at the Kranks is about this book.) I could see it taking place in my neighborhood!!

I'm not usually into John Grisham books, but I loved this. It was so cleverly written and funny...I couldn't put it down.

John Grisham turns a satirical eye on the overblown ritual of the festive holiday season, and the result is Skipping Christmas, a modest but funny novel about the tyranny of December 25.
Helpful Score: 1
I'm not a fan of John Grisham's books but thought this one would be a nice, humorous story. The premise sounded funny - a couple decide to not celebrate Christmas and all its commercial trappings. This includes decorating the outside of their house like everyone else does in their neighborhood. The neighbors are aghast at this breach of Christmas protocol. Yet, I didn't find this book very funny the way it was written. But humor is a very individual taste at times so anyone who likes Grisham and/or broad humor may like this book.

Not one of his best books and I love reading anything by John Grisham. It's just completely the opposite that I have come to expect from him.

This is one of the funniest books I have read. It has a serious side to the the funny parts make you laugh outloud. I'm ready for a re-read on this one.
Helpful Score: 1
This book was awesome and can be read in any season! You will laugh and cry. I must say that John Grisham out did himself in this book. I still don't understand what all the fuss was, with the Kranks skipping Christmas. You'd a thought they'd killed someone with the way their neighborhood acted. It all came together in the end, and it was beautiful! A must read!
Lots of fun, a nice light read.

I wanted to like this story, but eh. I didn't. Loved the first half of the book until the plot-pivoting phone call. The main characters plan on skipping Christmas for one year to give themselves a break from all the stress and the debt. Except, they don't skip it, and they still get stressed out and spend money. I guess the moral of this light-hearted story is... if you're going to be stressed and broke, better to do it together with your neighbors than alone during the holidays. Plenty of people will like this story's finale, but an introvert like me has a hard time warming up to it.

I did not think this book was of the same style writing I was used to from John Grisham. It makes for a nice and easy read for a night by the fire though.

John Grisham turns a satirical eye on the overblown ritual of the festive holiday season, and the result is Skipping Christmas, a modest but funny novel about the tyranny of December 25. Grisham's story revolves around a typical middle-aged American couple, Luther and Nora Krank. On the first Sunday after Thanksgiving they wave their daughter Blair off to Peru to work for the Peace Corps, and they suddenly realize that "for the first time in her young and sheltered life Blair would spend Christmas away from home."
Luther Krank sees his daughter's Christmas absence as an opportunity. He estimates that "a year earlier, the Luther Krank family had spent $6,100 on Christmas," and have "precious little to show for it." So he makes an executive decision, telling his wife, friends, and neighbors that "we won't do Christmas." Instead, Luther books a 10-day Caribbean cruise. But things start to turn nasty when horrified neighbors get wind of the Krank's subversive scheme and besiege the couple with questions about their decision.
Grisham builds up a funny but increasingly terrifying picture of how this tight-knit community turns on the Kranks, who find themselves under increasing pressure to conform. As the tension mounts, readers may wonder whether they will manage to board their plane on Christmas day. Skipping Christmas is Grisham-lite, with none of the serious action or drama of his legal thrillers, but a funny poke at the craziness of Christmas.

I thought this was such a fun easy happy ho ho read. This was a quick read but really fun. Loved all the hussle and busyness that goes on in the holiday season.
A very good book by Grisham.....highly recommended
This is so funny:) I would laugh outloud while reading this in bed and my hubby thought I was crazy!
Cute----predictable. A mindless read and definately not typical Grisham.
Different from his other venues, good.
The Kranks want to get away from all the stress and anxiety and pressure of Christmas; they want, in short, to skip it. Take a cruise instead. Sure! In time for the holidays, "Skipping Christmas" offers some light relief from famous suspense author John Grisham.
The book is better than the movie. A different kind of Grisham of book but not his best.
Better than the movie, such a good read.
Very Cute....
Imagine a year without Christmas. No crowded malls, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents.
A classic tale for modern times, Skipping Christmas offers a hilarious look at the chaos and frenzy that have become part of our holiday tradition.

Much better than the movie~
I loved this book! It made me laugh out loud and it was a great story.
A lighthearted romp about two people wanting to avoid the craziness of Christmas only to find out it's not about money, but good friends and family at home.
Cute story about all we go through at Christmas time-and what we do for our families. Funny!
Having sent their only child off to the Peace Corp - and suffering from empty nest syndrome - 2 everyday type of people with all the usual gripes and enjoyments find out skipping Christmas isn't quie what they expected.
So much better than the movie! I didn't know that Grisham could do comedy so well.
In a charming fable, John Grisham tells the story of one couple's hilarious attempt to escape Christmas, only to be forced by friends and family to rediscover the true meaning of the season....
Fun holiday read by John Grisham. A departure from his usual books. Well written, quick read, was made into a movie that starred Jamie Lee Curtis.
What a nice surprise from John Grisham! I never saw the movie, but the book is funny!!
I did NOT like this book. It was too cheesy and far-fetched for me.
funny, better than the movie!
Amusing tale made into the movie "Christmas With The Cranks".
I loved this lighter side of Grisham. It's a great story to read right before Christmas, especially if you are or have a Bah-humbug in your life..
Good story.
I loved this book. It is one of my keepers that I go back to over and over. It is very funny and a great read.
I enjoyed reading this book and never saw the movie. I could see Tim Allen and Janie Lee Curtis in my mind while reading the story. It is a fun book that hits on feelings many of us feel at holiday time.
Funny, fuuny book about what happens when you try to be different and do something else for a change.
This book is a total departure from John Grishams other books. A fun read and really funny. Just don't read this book if you are out in a public place, sometimes you justcan't help start laughing out loud and people will look at you funny.
This is a good christmas read, just read the book before seeing the movie. After watching the nmovie first the book seemed predictable.
This is such a fun Christmas read. We read it for the book club I run last Christmas and everyone really enjoyed it. Laugh out loud with every page!
Hilarious account of a couple's attempt to bypass the overblown commercialism of the holiday season--with disastrous results. Lighthearted, easy read. Recommended for anyone who thinks the pressures of Christmas come around a little too often.
Fun, light story just right for the holidays.
Very funny, easy read. I haven't seen the movie, but the book was hilarious, and much needed in ANY busy, traditional season full of mayhem and rituals.
The book is even better than the movie.
I loved this book, what a great laugh out loud book.
As good as the movie. Imagine a year without Christmas. Hilarious!
Hilarious and heart warming friendships and family!

I loved this book. Very quick and easy read. The movie was nowhere near as good as the book.
very funny!
Very cute, funny. A fast read.
Cute story and a very quick read.
Great, quick read; I liked the book much better than the movie based on the book (Chrismtas with the Kranks).
Talk about a tale of confusion. Very funny book reminds me of the average famies funny christmas stories.
I loveed this book. Very funny!!
As good as the movie! Fun holiday book.
#1 New York Times Bestseller. A fun read.
I was a good quick read. I liked the movie better. If you like Christmas you will like this book.
Not typical John Grisham, but still a good story.
A departure from Grisham's typical books, but a lot of fun. An easy read.
The book is much better than the movie (Christmas with the Kranks). Grisham has a sense of humor.
Fun read.... Better than the movie.
A quick and entertaining read, although quite predictable.
I read this book every Christmas, and I look foward to it each year. I think its a quick read and it just reminds me of my family and how crazy they get at Christmas. A great holiday story that is not some remake of something else, its an orgional and well worth reading.
I thought that this was a great book to read around Christmas. I really enjoyed it.
I have yet to see the movie, but this book was great.
Super cute book. Not the usual Grisham tale. Now I need to get the movie and watch it! Would definitely recommend this book.
Very cute book, easy to get into. Love the premise!! Didn't see the movie starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis but heard the book was better.
What could happen if your family decided to skip Christmas? A hilarious situation.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Love John Grisham!
Grisham always does a nice job in his books. This book is fun because it's holiday related. Afterall, they made a movie of it!
Very cute story, much more humorous than the movie version. Read this in an hour - very entertaining.
We've all thought about skipping Christmas, and this book shows that it may be impossible. I'm not a big Grisham fan, but I enjoy his recent forays out of law/mystery. Definitely worth a read!
Cute story; quick and easy to read; nothing like Grisham's "lawyer" books; the movie CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS is based on this one.
A funny story about a family who decided to Skip Christmas and all the Commericalism that goes with it. Quick easy reading. There was a movie made from this book.
Not like real Grisham, but a fun read.
Very funny! Movie followed it very closely.
Imagine a year without Christmas. No crowded malls, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents. That is just what Luther and Nora Krank have in mind when they decide that, just this once, they'll skip the holiday altogether. But as this weary couple is about to discover, shipping Christmas brings enormous consequences - and isn't half as easy as they'd imagined.
I just love this one!
This is a fun book. Very unlike John Grisham but good nonetheless. You will enjoy the antics that goes on and it reminds me a lot of Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase.
A very fast read. This is the first time I've read a John Grisham book. He's a very good author in my opinion. If you've seen the movie, you will notice a few slight differences. Funny!
A very funny and good book
An easy light read. Totally different from Grisham's other books!
Excellent, brand new condition but labeled for Book Crossing. Movie tie-in cover. The movie that was called "Christmas with the Kranks."
Funny book. Very entertaining. Good, quick read.
This is humorous. An easy read that you can finish in
one evening...and, fairly large clear type.

Easy read. Entertaining.
I laughed out loud! From the back cover: A classic tale for modern times, Skipping Christmas offers a hilarious look at the chaos and frenzy that have become part of our hliday tridition.
I really enjoyed this - made me laugh out loud a couple of times the way people are shocked when you try to make a change!
What a great book, and a great idea. Can't wait to the year I can skip christmas! This is a quick read, and I try to make time each season now to read at least part of it over, and over again.
great funny story!
Funny lighthearted story. Also a movie called "Christmas with the Kranks".
loved this book.....so much better than the movie.

read for a book club -- lots of people enjoyed it, but it just wasn't my cup of tea
Very fun and easy read. John Grisham is still my favorite.
I love this book, I read it every Christmas. Its not a regular John Grisham book. Its a quick read that will make you laugh out loud and put you in the holiday spirit.
easy quick reading. full of fun and frolic. a great book.
A funny and entertaining book - I enjoyed it!
more of a short story premise, one-dimensional stereotyped characters
good but on the short side
Very quick read. Amusing.
Fun novel and keeps interest.
Great book. Nice change of pace.
Good book - not the typical John Grisham. Enjoyable, funny.
Very easy funny read!!!
Not Grissom's usual fare, but cute. Great Cristmas book.
Great fun! I think Grisham can write any type of book!
A really neat book, with a heart-warming story. Good modern setting and good read for the holidays.
Quick, funny read. Reminds you what Christmas can really be about. And the neighborhood characters are well-written.
This was a fun book to read, especially around the holidays!
Reading "Skipping Christmas" you'll get everything you'd ask for if you want to be entertained or just having a fun time while reading a book. John Grisham showed once again his capabilities of being one of the most entertaining and easy-read authors. The best thing with this book is not only that it's entertaining, like most of his other books, but that it's full of humour and sarcasm. A really good and entertaining story about a couple that decides to skip Christmas and the resistance and doubt they meet among their friends and neighbors.
Hilarious and non-typical for John Grisham. Movie made from this book (Christmas with the Kranks? Something like that). Great short story about a couple that decides NOT to decorate their house for Christmas! HORRORS!
Do NOT compair this to the lame movie version that came out a few years ago. This is an unexpected offering from John Grisham, and a good one. Enjoy!
fun but thought provoking
This is a "laugh out loud" book. Great!
A very nice story. It is a feel-good novel with a delightful ending that expresses the true meaning of Christmas. I highly recommend this one.
Funny and we all can relate to what the family is going through during the holidays!
A fun and amusing book. Left me feeling good. I really enjoyed the story.
Just loved it! Another small, quick read...great for before the holidays!
A change from John Grisham's other books. This book was fast, funny and entertaining. This is a great book to reread during the holidays.
This was a cute story
A hilarious, sweet story.
Very cute and fast read!!!
Loved this book! A quick and easy read with lots of laughs...
A short & sweet novel, fun to read.
A light hearted twist for Grishmam. A terrific look at just how overwhelming and commercialized Christmas has become. Laugh out loud funny. I will never look at a plastic light up snowman the same again! Enjoyable holiday read!
A couple decides to skip Christmas but it isn't as easy as they thought it would be with their neighbors and family determined they will celebrate Christmas. A good light hearted read made into a movie.
very interesting and a quick read.
This is one of my favorite books of all time! I enjoyed it way more than the movie. You can read it quickly, and is very funny.
This is a great quick read that was great. It pulled you in and kept you reading!
too good read in one day
A funny Christmas story.
Very good short book.
Good book not like his other novels
Very funny.
Out of the norm for Grisham but a great book anyway.
First one of Grisham's books I didn't really care for. Didn't find his characters likeable as I usually do. Thus, I didn't really care how it turned out.
A great gift or for yourselves. The Christmas classic: "Skipping Christmas". Luther and Nora Krank decide no Christmas this year. They usually have a Christmas party for their neighbors. But they reckon without thinking of their neighbors, their college age daughter comes home and expects to celebrate Christmas! The Kranks discover skipping Christmas is bah humbug! A delightful Christmas read!
Wonderful book. Draws you in immediately. Funny and lighthearted. I couldn't wait to read the next page.
Quite an interesting book, easy to read, funny, and keeps you guessing.
If you have seen the movie Christmas with the Kronks then read this book. Books are always better than the movies made from them
A great easy read about the idea of skipping Christmas and all the chaos and frenzy that go with it.....only to find out that it isn't as easy as they thought!
Wonderful!
cute book, the movie is fairly close to the book, but like most, the book is better...
A fun book to read during the rush of getting ready for Christmas.
A different type of book for John Grisham, but a very heartwarming story for the holiday season.
A sweet little book telling the tale of a year without Christmas. A classic tale for modern times.
Excellent family story of what happens when you try to skip Christmas!
I got this book right before Christmas and finished it in about 4 days. It was a very easy read and the movie is VERY close to the book. Very fun and cute read.
Very humourous and entertaining book! A rib-tickler with a surprise ending.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. A fun book!!
I usually love Grisham stories, even the non-legal fiction (A Painted House, Playing for Pizza). This book just had a mixed up message and not very likeable characters. Was there a hero or villain? The actions of all the parties were always too extreme for the circumstances. I ended up skimming the last 20 pages looking for a conclusion so I could put it down.
Oh well, his next one will be worth it.

We get to see some humor from Mr. Grisham. A little too silly in places, but still a good read.
Pretty cute. It got really funny when they had to suddenly change all their plans on Christmas Eve. A quick enjoyable read.
I never knew that John Grisham could write such an interesting and exciting book that kept me on the edge till the end. I highly recommend reading "Skipping Christmas".
Very cute Christmas story
Great book! Better than the movie (Christmas with the Cranks)!
As a couple fed up with Christmas, these people refuse to decorate, or partake in holiday festivites at all. When you are "Fed up" with all the hype that Christmas brings, the money focus, this is the book to read. Great writing style. Not what I expected from him, but definitely shows his talent for branching out into other genres.Absolutely great - quick read.
Another great book from John Grisham!
This was a simple book, a quick read.
This was a fun book to read. If you have children over 18 it will most likely hit home. Not, a empty nester book. full of laughter. The title is misleading. It's how parents handle a quick change of plans. This was such a fun book they did make a move around it. As usual the book is so much more enjoyable. A quick fast read.
Great little read about "doing" Christmas for the sake of family. This is the book that the movie Christmas With The Kranks was based on.
This was a great short novel about the meaning of christmas- loved how everything worked out ;)
Cute & fast read, but overall negative tone. Luther is a miserable husband & father, but perfect grinch. Christmas with the Kranks.
Fun, unique story-line, certainly not what you would expect from John Grisham.
Imagine a year withut Christmas. No crowded malls, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents." -From the cover
Very good book and a quick little read about the true meaning of Christmas.
I used to read this book every year at Christmas. Very good book. Entertaining and has a good message. It is a lot better than the movie (but they always are!) :)
An enjoyable (and often comical) story that appeals to the Scrooge in each of us.
Story of Christmas With the Kranks.
This was one of his best. Loved it...
This was a very quick read. It was predictable and light.
I had fun with this book, since I have also seen the movie.

A different kind of book for John Grisham. Funny and so real!
I read a Grisham book once a long time ago, don't even remember which one, but I didn't care much for it and that was the end of that. But I had heard good things about Skipping Christmas, and when I found myself with a copy, I decided to give it a try. It's a nice story, hilarious is really not the word I would use. It didn't change my mind about John Grisham.
Read this on the plane yesterday coming home from Mexico. Love this book and the movie, Christmas With Kranks, is even better to watch.
This was an interesting book, and I was quite surprised by the turn of events, because I've never seen the movie.
A light-hearted romp, now a movie CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS, starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis.
From back cover: Luther and Nora Krank are fed up with the chaos of Christmas. The endless shopping lists, the frenzied dashes through the mall, the hassle of decorating the tree... where has all the joy gone? This year, celebrating seems like too much effort. With their only child off in Peru, they decide that just this once, they'll skip the holidays. They spend their Christmas budget on a Caribbean cruise set to sail on December 25, and happily settle in for a restful holiday season free of rooftop snowmen and festive parties.
But the Kranks soon learn that their vacation from Christmas isn't much of a vacation at all, and that skipping the holidays has consequences they didn't bargain for...
A modern Christmas classic, Skipping Christmas is a charming and hilarious look at the mayhem and madness that have become ingrained in our holiday tradition.

A very funny and amusing look at a couple trying to skip Christmas and the entanglements that ensue. It is hilarious and a quick read.

That's just what Luther and Nora Krank have in mind when they decide that, just this once, they'll skip the holiday altogether. Theirs will be the only house on Hemlock Street without a rooftop Frosty; they won't be hosting their annual Christmas Eve bash; they aren't even going to have a tree. They won't need one, because come December 25 they're setting sail on a Caribbean cruise. But as this weary couple is about to discover, skipping Christmas brings enormous consequences--and isn't half as easy as they'd imagined. A classic tale for modern times, "Skipping Christmas" offers a hilarious look at the chaos and frenzy that have become part of our holiday tradition. Made into a major motion picture starring Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Dan Akroyd.
Loved this story. Very different from all the other books.

--Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk--

A couple who take a Caribbean cruise during the Christmas holiday discover it isn't as easy as they had thought. A hilarious lok at the chaos and frenzy that have become part of our holiday tradition.
Now a movie called "Christmas with the Kranks (Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis)
The book/story is hilarious - a very fun read, throughly enjoyable any time of the year!

Great author.
My parents have read every John Grisham book there is, even his latest two (thanks to the library). I knew this book was the basis for the movie "Christmas with the Kranks." It's an easy and fast read. Not as funny as I thought it would be considering the movie stars Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Enjoyable quick read. This book is registered at bookcrossing.com
Was adapted to a film called Christmas with the Kranks. Quite funny and can be related to by all as the holiday season approaches.
Better than the movie version.
