Being from South Carolina I always love books that have anything to do with our beautiful state. Really enjoyed reading it!
I am just now starting to read SKYWARD, and I am loving it. The settug of the story with the wild bird santuary is absorbing. There are also lots of interesting characters. This on is a winner in my opinion.

Another enjoyable story by Mary Alice Monroe. Weaves a beautiful story of a man who owns a bird rescue and a relationship between himself, and a nurse he hires to come take care of his small daughter. So many wonderful characters are in this book; a teenager trying to find his way, a Gullah /Geechee man who teaches us so much about the culture of the south, and the birds, each with a personality of their own. I can always count on Mary Alice to write wonderful relationship stories, as well as teaching us about nature conservation!

My wife's book. She has read several by this author and has enjoyed them all. Location is in South Carolina. A nurse takes on the job of care-giver for a 5 yr with juv. diabetes whose widower father is a wild bird-of-prey rehabilitator.
Read this with a buddy in my online book club, The Reading Cove. I've enjoyed a couple of Mary Alice Monroe's other books, but I was disappointed in SKYWARD.
The story is avian-centered, with Harris Henderson as a South Carolina bird doctor who has a 5-year-old daughter with diabetes, named Marion. He calls in a nurse, Ella, to stay with them for one year, to help him care for Marion since he's always working with the birds, and his wife, Frannie, jumped ship shortly after Marion was born, but who continues to make appearances to shake things up for Harris and Ella...
Throw in a Gullah-speaking woo-woo black character, a wayward teenager, etc., all the usual side characters to add flavor, and you should have a winner right?
Wrong.
I found this storyline boring and very, very Super Harlequin predictable. I give it a C, it's very average...unless you're really into birds.
But after enjoying THE BOOK CLUB and SWEETGRASS, I still look forward to reading more of MAM's other books.
