Mende Nazer tells of her life of growing up in the Nuba mountains of Sudan. Her family showed her much kindness and love. When she was about 12 years old everything changed for her. She was kidnapped in a raid in her village and brought into nearly a decade of slavery as a live-in maid who was severely mistreated and never was allowed to be anything but a slave. I love how open Mende is. There were so many times her descriptions made me cringe with the detail of pain that she experienced on many levels, as well as how she was treated by others. This book was incredible! It is definitely a book that should be read by those who are researching human trafficking or want to read a truly powerful autobiography about what is going on around the world right now! There is a sequel to this book that I hope to read in time!

An important book to read - holds your interest throughout. My copy is not water marked but it does have a pink stain on bottom edge from back to front.

Excellent book. Story of how a group of Islam extremists raided a village near Sudan, killed most of the adults then took the girls, raped many of them, then sold them into slavery - in the 1990's.

One such girl was forced to sleep in an unheated "shed" while she worked long hours for a wealthy English family for many years - until her eventual rescue and escape.

The story is told in first person, compelling and was difficult to put down. It will remain on my shelf to re-read.
