I stumbled upon this book on the PBS site after looking for books similar to the Southern Vampires Mysteries by Charlaine Harris. I didn't know what to think from the reviews on the site. Some people gave it a good rating, others not so much. However, it was much more than what I was expecting.
What exactly was I expecting? A light, fun read, with fantasy, action and adventure. I wanted humor and romance. I wasn't looking for depth or sophistication. I wanted light entertainment. And that's what I got. Like Sookie Stackhouse, Aisling is a hands-on heroine. They both have powers. They both have trouble following them everywhere. If you liked the bedroom skills demonstrated by Sookie's lovers, you won't be disappointed by Drake.
So if you're up for a happy, light read, you'll sure enjoy this book.

Aisling Grey has just started her job as a courier and on her first run she finds the customer murdered, and the gold dragon statue she is supposed to deliver is stolen from right under her nose. The thief is Drake Vireo, who turns out to be a dragon in human form, and not only a dragon but the leader of his sept. Aisling also discovers she is a Guardian but she has no idea what that means. All she wants to do is to clear her name, because the police suspect she is the killer; and to retrieve her dragon statue from Drake so she won't be fired from her job. Things aren't easy though, because Aisling has a tendency to run straight into things without all the information. I agree with reviewer Cherie B. from Wilminton, MA who says Aisling "is a bit of a dunce at times, and the stupid-ness of her actions aggravated me". Ditsy would be the word. I have read another Katie MacAlister novel before this one - The Corset Diaries, which I didn't enjoy as much because the main character had annoying traits. In this case Aisling was much better, though they both have the tendancy to babble, speak without thinking, overlook the obvious, and make witty quips. For the most part this worked for her. I think the humor was a large part of what was enjoyable in the book, though in some occasions I felt like the writer could have held back on joking: it was laid on a little thick, especially some of the snarking between Aisling and her sidekick demondog Jim. Anyway, this was a fun novel and I enjoyed the world MacAlister created. I would recommend it as something cheerful to read and will read the next two.

This was my first book by MacAlister and I really enjoyed it. Some of the paranormal terminology was a bit confusing, but that was just for me. LOL I will continue to read more of this series.

This is the first book that I have read by this author - and it definitely won't be the last. The story had everything - action, adventure, steamy love scenes, magic, comedy and quirkiness. Aisling is a woman whose life has been far from perfect - and she is finally getting her act together with a job as a courier. Her first assignment is to deliver a package to Paris - but as with her life, nothing is ever easy. She meets sexy Drake - finds out that she is a guardian - and is wanted for murder. As she tries to clear her name, she fumbles through everything as she learns about her new role - and her attraction to Drake.
This is a great story - I highly recommend it - I love it so much that I just ordered the other 3 books in the series and I cannot wait to start reading them.

Both my daughter and I have enjoyed the Aisling Grey (and her Green dragon) series and are now looking forward to starting the next trio dealing with the Silver dragons. Katie MacAlister has a wonderful sense of humor.

I completely, utterly, totally love this book. I love the main characters, like the whole underground magic story MacAlister has come up with. Aisling is simiply so much fun to read about even more so when Drake was around and I could not wait to see what would happened next! Not to mention I felt that Jim (the demonic Newfoundland) is a wonderful character. To be completely honest he's probably my favorite character from the book. I am already looking for the next book and boy do I hope Jim is in it. He seems to have some of the best lines of the book. Kept be laughing for pages and can't wait to get my hands on the next book!! This is a book that just about anyone that likes paranormal would like so go buy it, I say buy cause I doubt I can give it away :P

This whole series is a lot of fun. Not deep, but fun. The first book (this one) is not the strongest of the series, but if you like light paranormal romance take a look at the series.

This had a really interesting story line. Have never heard of many of the creatures she introduces. I liked it well enough that I am going to read the second book. MacAlister's female protagonist has a smart mouth, but it isn't irritating and lends humor to the story. Her called-up demon Jim, who comes to her as a big dog, is great fun.

This is the first book in the Aisling Grey, Guardian series by Katie MacAlister. This is the first book I have read by MacAlister. The book ended up being exactly what I though it would be. It is a cute, funny and sexy little book that was a quick read.
Aisling is on a job as a courier delivering a golden dragon statue to someone in Paris. Only thing is when she shows up to make the delivery the recipient is deceased. To make matters more complicated someone else is on the scene with Aisling, his name is Drake and he is convinced that Aisling is a Guardian.
This book is fun little romp. It is more of a romance than most of the paranormals that I read, but it was a quirky little book that I found myself enjoying as I read it. There is some sex in the book but I thought it was tastefully done and not too drawn out. Aisling isn't the normal type of heroine I am drawn to; she is a self admittedly dense and a little bit flighty. Drake is an overpowering male, with about as much sensitivity as a slab of concrete. Still I found these books to be amusing. I also liked the way the magical community was set up in Paris. I find the structure of the dragon culture and the inclusion of dragons as an immortal race to be interesting. The position of Guardian is also interesting and I hope in the next book we find out more about exactly what a Guardian does.
If I had to compare this book to other series I have read I would say that it has a bit more substance and a less flighty heroine than the Queen Betsy series by Davidson but it is more flighty and less substantial than the Sookie Stackhouse series by Harris. Hopefully that will give you an idea of what type of book this is.
I think this series is a bit of a jealous pleasure, it is pure candy, but it hooked me and I enjoyed it all the same. I am excited to read the next book!

Light, comedy-romance-paranormal about a woman who is a guardian but doesn't know it. She doesn't know what a guardian is much less what a guardian does or the powers she is supposed to have. She reads a book and manages to summon a demon that is a castout and next to useless. Trial and error produces varying results.

Hilarious!! Ashling is a disaster waiting to happen, reminds be of Stephanie Plum. This book will make you laugh and the other in this series are great as well.

I stay away from this genre of romance like the plague. This one is from the subgenre of supernatural-romance. I figured I would give it a try. I have no idea why other than out of curiousity. Now i have to admit that I enjoyed it. In fact, I will be reading the next in this series. All I can say, is give it a try...you might like it. It's an easy, light read good for killing time. Some of us have that time these days so why not give this a go?

This was a fun, fast read and MacAlister sets up her world in a way that you can easily understand. Jim, the demon in dog form, is hilarious.

I really loved this first Aisling Grey book, with the wonderful big mounthed demon. It was hillarious and I looked forward to the next book as her dragon romance was not resolved. A fun read, her later books just don't get this funny, and lose their logic.

This is my third attempt at a Katie MacAlister book, and happily it was the most enjoyable. I gave this book 3.5 stars for being a generally likable fantasy.
The story is told from the first person perspective of Aisling, a woman embarking on a new carrier as an international courier. Said career is cut short when she finds her first client dead, the victim of ritualistic murder the police think she was a part of. Shortly thereafter Aisling discovers that demons, dragons, mages, and other innumerable mythic creature exist and that she is fated to be a part of them. Not only is she Guardian (of a portal to hell, apparently), she is also the mate of a very sexy dragon named Drake. Now Aisling must solve the mystery, prove her innocence, discover her place in the world of paranormal creatures, and try to resist Drake's advances.
To try to place this book in some sort of category, I'd say that it has similarities to Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse books, or Karen Marie Moning's Fever series. You have a plucky, debatably incompetent heroine who is forever in some sort of trouble. Aisling never has any idea what's really going on, but she isn't afraid to take action anyway. I couldn't help but cheer her on even as I groaned at her ignorance and stubbornness. This, to me, is one recipe for a good narrator/protagonist. She and her sidekick demon dog, Jim, basically make the story worth reading.
Other good points: This book is set in Paris, which just adds to Aisling's struggle and the comedic level of the story (she doesn't speak a word of French). Drake is sexy and mysterious.
He's also underdeveloped, which brings me to the negative part. It's as though the author felt she really didn't need to spend too much time on Drake or the potential relationship between him and Aisling, since she was planning to do so in later books. This sort of thing always frustrates me, as I prefer books to be able to stand alone to some degree. The romance was just lukewarm, with some vague promise of heating up later on. That's a shame since there's a lot of potential between Aisling and Drake.
The plot was serviceable but predictable. I think had it not been told from Aisling's hilarious perspective it would have been utterly dull. The author chooses to focus on Aisling's discoveries of the world and her powers rather then any meaningful story arc. Understandable for a first book, but a bit tiresome.
Overall, it's a comical light read for the paranormal fan.

This book starts off great, its fun and witty and the middle of it literally had me laughing out loud, so I ordered the next two books in the series, eager to read more about the funny Aisling Grey and her misadventures. But.. i feel like I ordered the books too soon. The ending completely fell apart with plot holes, a change in character personalities (many go suddenly flat), quick and unsatisfactory wrap-ups and lots of eye rolling from me and muttering "whatever, lets just finish this book...". I started off loving this series, but I ended it trying to remember why.

I loved this book! I loved the characters, the concept, the storyline, the plot, the tone, the humor, the mystery, the setting....all of it! This was a great read and one I will definitely keep to re-read later. I can't wait to read the other books in this series.

I've been wanting to read YOU SLAY ME, the first in the Aisling Grey, Guardian Series, for quite awhile, and was supremely happy when it reared it's head in my never-ending "to-be-read" pile. And I'm so glad I did!
Aisling, on her first outing as a courier for her uncle's business, has traveled to Paris to deliver an aquamanile-- unfortunately, the Madame who was supposed to be purchasing it ends up being dead, in the same apartment Aisling has just entered. And merde! if that wasn't bad enough, there's another visitor to the deceased's apartment--a very handsome, sexy, irritating man who introduces himself as Drake Vireo.
Questioned by the local authorities and then released, Aisling is dismayed to find facts being thrown at her fast and furiously--demons, which she had always been interested in studying and reading about, are real; there is an entire Otherworld filled with mages, a Venediger, Wiccans, imps, dragons, and all sorts of other characters; some practicing in dark magic, others in white.
Oh, and the fact that she's a Guardian? Everyone keeps telling her she is, although she has no clue as to what they're talking about. They tell her she's a Keeper of the Gates of Hell, but instead Aisling is pretty sure she's walked into a version of Hell right there in Paris. Oh, and Drake, that handsome, sexy stranger in the dead woman's apartment? He's a dragon--a green dragon, wyvern leader of his sept, and Aisling is his mate. And that demon, Effrijim, that she summoned in a moment of need? He's a displaced demon whose been outcast by his Lord, has taken the form of a black Newfoundland, and likes to eat horse meat, pee on bushes, suck on the ears of a Corgi, and sing "Elvira".
This is by far one of the most interesting paranormal romance series I've read lately. Hilarious dialogue, sizzling passion between Aisling and Drake, and the way Aisling comes into her own with regards to her powers makes this book a definite winner.
What steals the show, though, is Jim. The demon-dog has the best lines in the book, and had me laughing out loud so many times that I finally lost count. I sincerely hope that Ms. MacAlister continues to make use of this awesome original character in the upcoming books.
**I have to note (yes, probably sarcastically, but I can't help myself!) that if anyone chewed on their bottom lip as much as Aisling does, they'd have nothing for lips but bloody strips of skin. If you can put that aside, however, you'll do just fine.

Such a cute series! I don't know WHY they put these in romance, they're sci-fi/fantasy to me...Very clever, very funny.

Quick, easy read. These characters didn't really grab my attention. Amusing enough, but I probably won't read the rest.
This is the first book I read from this author. I really enjoyed the book. I am not usually into paranormal and i like the traditional love story, but this was great. I liked Aisling and Drakes chemistry and the mystery that they solve. Its an easy read and I found the paranormal stuff easy to understand.

I loved this book....it begins that tale of a woman who goes for what she desires and is rewarded in the end.

A good read, different from her vampire series though. Im still not sure whether or not I like Aislings character all that much though, shes a bit of a dunce at times, and the stupid-ness of her actions aggravated me sometimes. I tend to prefer a strong female like Anita Blake, to these ditzy ones, but thats just my preference. Most likely it doesnt bug others as much as it does me. And Katies characters always seem to be somewhat ditzy in most of her books anyway, yet I still read them so theres obviously something I like that makes me overlook the annoying-ness of her character. I do have the 2nd in this series, Fire Me Up, which I plan to read shortly hopefully Aisling has gotten a hold on some of her powers then and can learn to listen with her full mind instead of just what she can see right in front of her.

This book is very good. The story is different from other paranormal books I have read. The main characters are interesting and well written. The book was a fun read.
I'd passed up this book I don't know how many times in book stores, but when I found it available here on PBS I decided, "What the heck?" And I'm so glad I did! I loved this book from start to finish and intend on following the series! Katie MacAlister delivers just the right amounts of comedy, intensity and sensuality to make this read come to life!
I'm befuddled that this series is not wish-listed; it's much better than a lot of paranormal and/or romance series out there. This is a good pick if you're in the mood for something light-hearted and fun.
I've read a bunch of occult series by other authors, and in comparison, "You Slay Me" just falls flat. The main character, Aisling, is clueless and I'm guessing she's also crazy; she talks to herself and all the time, naively puts her trust in random strangers & demons, blindly jumps into dangerous situations, and prioritizes her career before saving the world. The story is also ridiculous with every convenience popping-up whenever Aisling needs it, and very little detective work (all she does is run around town asking suspects "did you do it?").
Equally irritating is the author's writing style (which is juvenile). The murders are not graphic or gruesome, and Aisling is never in any real peril. Seriously, I've read R.L. Stine books with more grit and suspense. And the author tries too hard to be funny. If you were expecting witty humor like Stephanie Plum, you're going to be very dissapointed. Probably the best laugh is over Aisling constantly picking up demondog poop. I mean, seriously? That's the best you can do with comedy, Katie MacAlister?

I loved the Aisling Grey series! It was so much fun! Drake is not so much a hero as an anti-hero, but Aisling wouldn't let him save the day anyway, she's a professional! LOL. I love Katie MacAlister's whole dragon series. It's best to start at the beginning though.
Katie MacAlister never fails to make me laugh out loud. This was a very good book and I would definitely recommend this to my friends.
This quirky, witty novel kept me turning the pages until I reached then end. And when I finally did I longed for more. I will definitely be reading the remaining books in this series! Very well done.

Literally. My prior career as a courier began and ended when I traveled to Paris to deliver a six-hundred-year-old golden dragon statue and learned I was a Guardian. That's a Keeper of the Gates to Hell to you mere mortals. This I found out from Drake Viero, a scrumptiously sexy (in human form at least) real-life dragon. Then he stole my artifact out from under my nose--and from under the dead body of the person I was supposed to deliver it to.
After tracking Drake down to a local bar, I discovered I'm also a wyvern's mate. And wouldn't you know Drake is a wyvern? He couldn't be just some underling--he had to be head dragon. But the fact that he's the prime suspect behind the murders in Paris's immortal underworld--murders I must solve in order to clear my suddenly soiled name--means it will take some convincing to get me to partake of the sensual pleasures he offers. Just because I'm naive doesn't mean I'm easy.

BOOK 1 OF THE GUARDIAN NOVELS, I think Katie MacAlister is very funny, but the thing is I'm not crazy about how pornographic this is. My favorite character is the silly dog, fercryinoutloud!!!
It was a pretty good book. I am eager to read more in this series.

Such a quirky book- wasn't sure I was going to like it at first- but I ended up just reading it straight through! You either like her writing or you don't.
That was cute and a little different than the other paranormal stories that I have read. I'm not a big fan of romance and I wasn't really into this at first, but the plot picked up speed and I started to get into it. I think that Jim, Aisling's sidekick, was my favorite part of the book.

An Aisling Grey, Guardian novel. Smart, sexy and laugh-out-loud funny.
This book had a great idea for a plot, however it ended up reading too much like a romance novel for my taste.
I was actually very disappointed with this book. The storyline was one dimensional, as in the only side the reader saw was the main female character. The male dragon character was a let down in my opinion as he wasn't well developed and the reader did not get any glimpse into his life or his thoughts. The love story was non-existent as the main story was more of a "whodunnit" murder mystery. There were only a few scenes where the two were even together and one of them was a dream.
This book would be good for someone looking for a mystery with a little fling thrown in. This is not a good book though for someone that likes to be involved with both characters and really likes a solid man character in the story. I also didn't like how this book actually continues into another book. There is no ending. You have to read the next book I guess to learn what happens.

Damn clever. Again, a great character. Aisling is an interesting chickie. But, for my money, the dog/demon is the best.

Enjoyable romp through the otherworld! Aisling didn't know she was a Guardian until she stumbled across an occult murder, met a very sexy dragon, and summoned a demon in the form of a Newfoundland dog!

very similar to the Mary Jane Davidson type characters...still not sure what a guardian does, but she doesn't know she is one! Nice twist that her heart's desire is a dragon in human form who can't resist chasing or stealing gold!

Fun read. I liked it better than the vampire novels. Aisling Gray is a fun character, and Jim the Demon Dog is a great sidekick. I enjoyed the story.

Aisling Grey is a courier enjoying a free, work-related trip to Paris when she learns she's a Guardian. That's a keeper of the Gates of Hell, for those who don't know. She finds this out from Drake Vireo, who's scrumptiously sexy-at least in his human form. Now Drake has stolen the package Aisling was sent to deliver, and she must track him down, get the package, and try to resist the passion boiling inside her.
Aisling Grey's career as a courier is put on hold, while she deals with a murder and Drake Vireo. Drake is a real-life dragon and in human form is very sexy. She also conjures up a demon in the form of a Newfoundland dog.
