Old one, but great one. This is the sequel to Butcher's Boy. Read it out of sequence, but cannot wait to read Butcher's boy! So happy to have found this author! His latest books are also very good!
It's chaos once again all around The Butcher's Boy (TBB), with bodies falling like rain, as TBB under a series of aliases takes out every Mafia kingpin he can reach before realizing that law enforcement is also aware of him and closing rapidly. What can he do to ensure he's just left alone? Perry does a great job making the reader sympathize with a stone-cold killer. As before, Elizabeth is the smartest on the government side but she's always just a half-step behind, sometimes thanks to incompetent help. The DoJ doesn't want a murderer loose, but on the other hand, if someone wants to kill the Mafia, who are they to stand in his way?
If you had not read The Butcher's Boy, you'd still enjoy this book although some of the fun would be lost. Over the course of SLEEPING DOGS, Perry manages to work in most of the important plot points of the last. More of TBB's apprenticeship with Eddie the butcher comes out; and you just can't tell if he started out amoral or learned it. I loved Elizabeth's fury as the entire situation plays itself out almost as it did ten years before.
This is a real page-turner, one of Perry's best.
