I decided to try this book despite the negative or lukewarm reviews, and ended up feeling lukewarm about it myself. I liked the concept of the story and unlike most others, was pretty amused by the protagonist. However, I do think it was longer than it needed to be, and a lot of the situations were discussed in such oblique terms that I wasn't always sure what actually occurred. I still liked it, and for those who are on the fence after reading other reviews, I suggest you give it a shot.
This book just wasn't for me. I found the lead character repugnant. The overall premise of the book was a good one, but the author went too many directions at once and brought in too many threads without ever developing any of them enough in my opinion. Add to that a thoroughly repulsive lead character and it all added up to disaster. I forced myself to finish the book because I rarely will put a book down half finished. The book really didn't get any better nor did it offer any real surprises. Some people may love this book, but it just wasn't to my liking.
