Managing to combine family and all the chaos and warmth that entails with a professional Judge and tie it all up in a satisfying conclusion is Margaret Maron's gift. This is her nineth book in this series (she has another). The heroine (Knott) is shocked to learn that the carnival worker she discovers kicked to death behind a stall is really her nephew. The two worlds meet up and the familiarity of the carnival culture and slang give this an story a unique voice. There's even a glossary of terms at the end of the book. The plot keeps you guessing and the personal side just adds to but never overwhelms the mystery. Great read.

Very well-written mystery. Dramatic without being overblown, and compelling while staying realistic. Would definitely read another in the series.

This is the only one of Maron's Deborah Knott series that I hadn't read before; it's #9. It fills in a bit of personal backstory I missed, which I liked. It's another easy cruise through a bit of North Carolina, although probably everyone in the US has memories of the little fairs that pop up during the summer. Maron evokes the carnival atmosphere very nicely. I didn't guess the murderer...not sure she gave the reader enough to go on...but no matter. The main characters were interesting, the romantic part might be a surprise if you haven't read farther into the series, and all the family drama is present. Loved the very very end and I saw that coming, very amusing. Fast read, finished it in a couple hours.

Good solid story, my first Judge Deborah Knott book and I found it entertaining and some laugh out loud moments for the southern dialogue.

This is a devilish plot that ends with a thoroughly unexpected but satisfactory twist.
