Managing to combine family and all the chaos and warmth that entails with a professional Judge and tie it all up in a satisfying conclusion is Margaret Maron's gift. This is her nineth book in this series (she has another). The heroine (Knott) is shocked to learn that the carnival worker she discovers kicked to death behind a stall is really her nephew. The two worlds meet up and the familiarity of the carnival culture and slang give this an story a unique voice. There's even a glossary of terms at the end of the book. The plot keeps you guessing and the personal side just adds to but never overwhelms the mystery. Great read.

Very well-written mystery. Dramatic without being overblown, and compelling while staying realistic. Would definitely read another in the series.

slow dollar has to do with a carnival and a murder at the carnival . really enjoyed the story
You can almost smell the cotton candy and hear the barkers inviting you to try your skill at a game of chance in this lively new mystery starring Colleton County, North Carolina, Judge Deborah Knott. Knott's stunned to discover that Brazos Hartley, murdered on the midway at the Harvest Festival carnival, was a member of her family; his mother, Tally Ames, is Deborah's first cousin, born of a shotgun marriage and abandoned as a child by her father, Deborah's brother. Naturally, when there's a second carnival murder, Deborah can't help getting involved in the investigation, even if it means uncovering secrets some of her relatives would just as soon keep confidential. The huge Knott clan, with Deborah at its center, gives Maron a wealth of material (the judge herself is one of 12 siblings!), which she makes the most of with wonderfully drawn characters and a beautifully evoked setting. The next best thing to a summer night at a country carnival, Slow Dollar is a standout in a series that just keeps getting better.
Learn about carnival languae in this Knott light mystery and meet a "lost" relative.Loved all her books.
A rag tag carnival comes to a small NC town and murder follows
Another enjoyable read with Judge Knott and her large family.
This is another book in Maron's series featuring Judge Deborah Knott.
When the annual county fair and carnival comes to town, Deborah goes out to have some fun, but someone has other ideas. Soon she is investigating a murder, getting to know a new niece, and the strange world of the carnival.
This is an excellent book, as most of Maron's are. In addition to a good plot, it also advances the relaitionships that are the heart of the series.

This entire series of Judge Deborah Knott by Margaret Maron is an absolutely joy to read.
The characters are well thought out and explained and continued throughout the series.
The locations and situations are wonderful too - even with the 'journalistic license' taken.
One feels you know the places, folks, taste the food, experience the wonderful place that is
North Carolina. I simply just loved it and could not wait to read on and on.

Good solid story, my first Judge Deborah Knott book and I found it entertaining and some laugh out loud moments for the southern dialogue.
Easy read and entertaining.

This is the only one of Maron's Deborah Knott series that I hadn't read before; it's #9. It fills in a bit of personal backstory I missed, which I liked. It's another easy cruise through a bit of North Carolina, although probably everyone in the US has memories of the little fairs that pop up during the summer. Maron evokes the carnival atmosphere very nicely. I didn't guess the murderer...not sure she gave the reader enough to go on...but no matter. The main characters were interesting, the romantic part might be a surprise if you haven't read farther into the series, and all the family drama is present. Loved the very very end and I saw that coming, very amusing. Fast read, finished it in a couple hours.
This is a devilish plot that ends with a thoroughly unexpected but satisfactory twist.
All of Margaret Maron's Deborah Knott mystery stories are great. And this one is no exception!
