Good book. Author made you care about the main charactors and want to know what happens to them as they go through some unusual twists and turns. There are some sex scenes that got a little too detailed. I'm not a prude and they certainly didn't take away from the story but I have a 12 year old granddaughter who loves to read and always tries to read what Grandma's reading and frankly I didn't want to have to go there with her. I can't recommend leaving this book laying around if you have a young bookworm nearby. : )

Another superb mystery/romance from Sandra Brown. It kept me guessing until the very end. Both of the main characters, a newspaper reporter and a police detective. are involved in mysterious, but separate ,circumstances which bring them together. It contains a more involved story line than other of Brown's novels.

I just don't know where to start---this is such a well written story that you are hooked from the very beginning, the plot is good and easy to follow, the characters are so clear you can almost see them, it never gets bogged down with too much of anything, it has just the right amount of the story, the sex, the twist, the story, the twist again, this is one book that Sandra Brown didn't get carried away with 6 pages of one sex scene and it is a much better story to stick with, it is hard to put down for any reason.

This was a excellent, enteraining, exciting read. It was the first one that I read of this author. It is full of twists and turns right up to the very end of the novel. The story is set in Charleston, S.C. There is major fire. Serveral peaple are killed in it. There are four hero's who did their best to save people or did they. This is a story of corruption, berayal, deception, and murder. I highly recommend this book.

Not one of her best. I've enjoyed Sandra Brown's suspense books in the past, but this one fell short. It started off strong, and then fizzled out. I ended up skimming parts of it and had to practically make myself finish it. It could've been a hundred pages shorter and still told the story. I'm glad I checked it out at the library and didn't waste a credit here. I wouldn't recommend it.

This was a great read from start to finish! The characters were totally believeable, and the plot took lots of twists and turns. It kept me guessing right up until the very end. One of my favorites so far by Sandra Brown.

An excellent book by Sandra Brown. It starts off where a female reporter, Britt, wakes up to find herself in bed with a policeman. She knows the guy, but doesn't know how she got there or how he wound up dead. When his police buddies start putting the pressure on her, she's fairly certain that she was drugged and then set up. But they don't buy her excuse.

When she's about ready to be officially charged with homicide, she's kidnapped by a guy that was a top notch investigative fireman. However, he became discredited when Britt helped create a media storm to discredit him. At first she thought his motive was revenge. She later learned that he was in a situation very similar to hers. That he had been drugged and set up as well. And, the characters involved were the same ones that helped create her current nightmare.

Eventually the two form an alliance as they try to piece together why they were drugged and then set up and discredited. Just who were the bad guys? Who can be trusted as they were innocent? And what was the motive?

An excellent novel and one that was hard to be put down. I rated it 5 STARS!!

Really loved the characters in this book. They just seemed "real to me". Lots of turns, but always turn out to be a happy ending when I turn the last page. Sandra brown's books always leave me happy that I read the story.

It took me a while to read this book because I had trouble getting into it. In my opinion, it is not one of the author's best but it has been a while since I've read anything by Sandra Brown so maybe I'm not being fair. I did like the last few chapters very much. Lots of turns and twists and surprises. I am not sorry I read it and am passing it on to my daughter-in-law who loves Sandra Brown's romantic suspense. If you are fan of Ms. brown I think you'll enjoy this one also.

Just finished reading this book and enjoyed it so much.
Sandra Brown is a great author but she has out done her
self on this one. You just can't put the book down and
before you know it you have finished it. Keeps in suspense.

I'll tell you something...I would never want to get into an argument with Sandra Brown. She'd just twist me into a pretzel without even trying! SMOKE SCREEN proves this, with its 3-dimensional characters, reasoned (if outrageous) behaviors and truly twisty plot

From back cover: When newswoman Britt Shelley wakes up to find herself in bed beside Charleston PD detective Jay Burgess, she remembers nothing of how she got there--or how he wound up dead. Burgess was one of four heroic city officials who risked their lives five years earlier to lead others to safety from a catastrophic fire that his lifelong friend, Raley Gannon, was later assigned to investigate. But Raley never finished the inquiry because one calamitous night his career was destroyed by scandal. Now, the newswoman whose biased reporting helped bring about Raley's downfall might be his only chance to vindicate himself and get justice for the fire's victims. But the more Raley and Britt discover about that fateful day, the more perilous their situation becomes, until they're not only chasing the truth but running for their lives.

This is the first book I have read by Sandra Brown and it definitely won't be the last. Very good, well-developed characters and a real page-turner.

Female reporter is wrongly accused of murder and teams up with wrongly accused ex-fireman to solve an arson mystery.

Not one of Brown's best books, in my opinion. But if you're a fan, you should read it.

Another good whodunit but a bit long/slow in the beginning. The final third of the book was great. I think if it was 100 pages shorter the story would have been more gripping. As a side note, Ms. Brown uses "got" instead of "gotten" in many of her sentences, which may or may not be proper grammer depending on her particular meaning.

A real page-turner with a strong female protagonist. A great mystery read with very good character development. I had never read any books by Sandra Brown and probably never would have if a friend hadn't recommended it and given it to me. Now, I would buy and read more by this author.
