As others have said this book was an OK read. The premise of the story is a very interesting take of a post-apocalyptic world where the majority of the world is covered in ice and snow and mankind has reverted back to hunter and gatherer type societies very similar to Native American or Eskimo tribes. Ms. Smith has a decent writing style but at times the characters come off as distant and hard to connect with. Since the plot focuses more on the struggles of a small village and the trapper's strife with other tribes trying to take over their lands there isn't much build...climax...resolution. Overall the book's plot was a bit flat.
I also felt that the books description was not the best as it seems like the book will be written from Catania's perspective whereas in fact it is written in 3rd person perspective and the focus jumps from person to person. I think that it would have been a much better read if it had been a first person account from Catania's perspective.
While over all it was still a good read I feel that I should warn readers that the series isn't very linear. The first book deals primarily with Catania's people running from the Cree, a rival tribe that has been pushed into their land by yet another rival tribe. It details their escape and battle with the Cree until a very small band of the survivors head south and encounter cities and people beyond their wildest expectations. The second book picks up with the baby, Sam, who is now a grown man trying to defend his kingdom from invaders.
Overall, if you enjoy books about historical time periods (yes, it's futuristic but everyone has reverted to a life style that is reminiscent of the 1500's) or sociological/anthropological conflict then you might like this book. I don't regret reading it but I will probably not be continuing the series.
