I struggled with giving this book more than a couple of stars. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either.
On the positive side, it's definitely different from any other book I've ever read. It also contained a lot of information about animals that was interesting to me. However, I'm not much of an outdoorsy type of person, so I couldn't relate to the main character's love of being in the wild all alone. So maybe because of that, I felt a bit detached from the story.
My biggest complaint was how unbelievable the story was. It felt like I was reading about a female MacGyver. No matter what issues came up, the main character could handle it. She could shoot guns, fix her own vehicle, fight off a mountain lion, etc. It almost made me laugh out loud when she could even fly a plane. But what couldn't she do? Stand up to her college ex-boyfriend who treated her horribly bad. When he showed up out of the blue, I almost threw the book at the wall. She's supposedly the tough I-can-do-it-all type of person (think Wonder Woman), but she couldn't seem to break free of a relationship that had gone south already.
I don't know how I ended up finishing this one. I think I just wanted to see how bad it would get. If I find myself with nothing new to read one day, maybe I will venture out to read the next book in the series but I am not going to go out of my way to hunt down the next book, nor will I spend much money on it.

If you love wild animals and the outdoors, you'll enjoy this thriller, which takes place at a moribund ski resort in Montana that has reverted to near-wilderness. I found the dialogue kind of clunky and the plot rather predictable up until around page 200, after which the pace quickened greatly with some unexpected twists. The descriptions of the landscape and animals seem convincingly authentic, and I've signed up to read the author's next effort in this series.
