A girl making money playing pool? Why not? Cassie Claiborne, the key character lives in rural Indiana. Her father was a pool playing hustler. Beginning to hustle at age twelve, she became a pool shark, too. As she grows up she works odd jobs and plays pool to support the family.

I chose this book because I liked A Girl Named Zippy written by the same author whose writing a liked very much. Zippy was autobiographical but this book is fiction although some believe it is third in a trilogy. I'm not quite so sure. I do like Cassie. She is tough and smart, and determined to make her way in the world. From a dysfunctional family, she copes with a distracted mother, a sister whose brilliance is marred by her fragility, and a father who has another wife so is seldom around. This is a real world family with real world problems which at times seem unsurmountable.

The author takes the everyday life of this brave determined young woman and makes it one the reader can visualize and live. Her writing is flowing and compact as she weaves a coming of age story about a young woman who eventually finds love and a place of her own.

At first, this story was hard to get into. I'm not from this part of the country (Indiana) and I don't understand pool, but I am very glad that I stuck with it. I loved the story, but there are strange philosophical tangents which make it a little hard to believe at times. If you can wade through all these, you'll love this audio-cassette. It is one that I actually stayed in my car after arriving home to listen to. The narrator has a fresh and enthusiastic style and you might just learn something about pool!
