It feels like reconnecting with a group of old friends whenever a new Mercy Thompson book is released. There's the usual wonderful mix of action against a paranormal bad guy, romance scenes with Mercy and Adam, community scenes with all the wolves, and back history on Zee and the friendly vampires this time around. The level of political machinations raised my eyebrows but I'm along for the ride wherever Briggs heads.
Oh wow. Just, WOW. It will take me a while to lay out why I feel this is the best work Briggs has ever produced. If you want the quick and dirty recommendation here it is; Read this book. If you are a Briggs fan you already want to, what are you waiting for? Dive in, it's a solid read whatever your preference. If you are looking for a new UF Author this is your lucky day, you won't find many better than Patricia Briggs. I enjoyed the hell out of this book. If UF is your jam you'll like it too. But maybe start at book 1
This is truly the best book I've read in years. Briggs has a rare gift. She can make me sigh with a sentence, bring me to tears with a smattering of words. Some of her simply phrased statements are burnt into my memory. This author is a master at evoking a tone; she could probably make me feel anything she chose. But I derive enjoyment more from the stories structure than the story itself, and she had never put a story together in a way that made me go "Hell Ya!" until now.
Soul Taken hit all of my happy buttons. It's as if she reached into my head and pulled out exactly what I'd been wishing for. Pacing, narrative, introspection, foundation, all perfectly in sync; so satisfying, so much fun. And to make it even better she used none of her usual drama inducing ploys. Zip. Zero. Nadda. Happy Dance!
Mercy and Adam don't become separated. Their mate bond isn't on the fritz. There is no extraneous pack BS. And Adam's ex isn't an issue. True, Christy isn't a consistent source of drama - I have Christy issues. A truck can't hit that despicable creature soon enough to suit me. I'm gonna throw a Rave when she kacks, dance until my feet blister.

Okay, Soul Taken demanded my attention from the jump, and would not let me go. It's a must read for anyone who enjoys good UF, especially if you read it in October, as I unintentionally did. It's a little violent, well maybe more than a little violent (Yippee!). It has amazing character interaction. My rational brain knows that werewolves in reality is a capital d disaster. But my stupid heart just wishes this crew were real. And the really cool part? Briggs let Ben of his chain a bit. She's been keeping his vocabulary very....well, Mercy calls it colorful - but considering how evocatively Ben can sling the epilates around I call it tame. I was beginning to fear she'd never let him cut loose again, but he got to limber up his vocab a bit. My inner twelve year old is still grinning. And she dropped in a "Woah...I Did Not see that coming" surprise that set me back on my heels. (Hoo-Boy! Things are gonna start getting GOOD.)
Soul Touched gave me everything I wanted, and a few things I didn't even know I needed. Mercy and Adam are one of my favorite couples. It's always fun spending time with them. But here they are amazing, and so playful together it made my heart giddy. I got my Zee fix too. I have a mad crush on the crusty Siebold Adelbertsmiter. I seldom get enough of the Dark Smith of Drontheim, and Patty let me marinate in him to my heart's content. She also cued-up the next book so adroitly I am all but salivating for it. I can't see what shape it will take, but this story left me with so many tantalizing questions that it will be torture waiting for the next one. I've never kissed a book because it was extraordinary, (Pre-Covid germaphobe here.) But it was this close.
I feel in my bones the next one is going to be great. Hurry up Patty please!
