I don't read a lot of mystery novels so I'm sure this one was fine. I was disappointed though that it didn't actually have a ghost in it. That was why I had wanted to read it. The story was good and the end reminded me of old-fashioned mystery movies where the killer dramatically reveals him or her self.
Max Darling receives a panicky phone call from his client, Courtney Kimball. She urges him to meet with her immediately but when he arrives at the agreed-upon place, she does not show up. When they do some investigating Max and his wife Annie find that Courtney has just discovered that she is part of the wealthy and powerful Tarrant family. She wants Max to find out who murdered her father and grandfather in 1970. Max and Annie figure that it has to be either a family member or one of the servants, since they were the only ones with motive and opportunity. They travel to the family home and interview each of the suspects, finding that each person has a motive for the murders. Max and Annie discover many secrets in the Tarrant family and that wealth and prominence do not make them immune from tragedy, greed, and deceit. This is a page-turner that will keep you guessing until the very end.
I found this book in an antique store in Kansas City and since I had just finished Carolyn Hart's Southern Ghost, I knew this would be another thrilling mystery with characters I can like and trust. In this episode of the Death on Demand series, Annie Darling finds herself pursuing the truth about her husband, Max's, disappearance. Is he dead, kidnapped or just late coming home? In terror of what she might find, she goes to his office and surprises a burglar. That's when she decides to call in the local sheriff, a friend and confidant. Max's car is located and the body of a young woman nearby, the murder weapon a tire iron found in the trunk. When Max turns up terribly disheveled and incoherent, he is the prime suspect. Annie becomes drawn into a case that has terrible ramifications for her and her husband. It is a real page-turner.
