This book was so much fun. It is loaded with interesting characters that make up a fun, and charming world. It was a blast from start to finish and I totally enjoyed it.
Favorite Quote that pretty much sums up how it all starts Listen, Doll, Frankie said his tone softening a hair. When your great-uncle so-and-so dies, theres a reason you scatter his ashes. You scatter, he said making a motion like he was feeding birds or something. You let them catch the wind. You give the spirit freedom if he wants it. His voice grew tight. You dont dump them all in one spot then stomp on em.
Verity is a down on her luck graphic designer from Sugarland Tennessee who gets in a little over her head when she leaves her ex-fiancé Beau Wydell at the altar. Beau happens to be the most eligible bachelor in three counties, and from a very prominent Sugarland family. After being sued by Mrs. Leland Herworth Wydell III for every dime she has left to pay for the scandal that was supposed to be their wedding Verity owes more than $20,000. While cleaning out her house to get the money she inadvertently lets loose the ghost of Beaus uncle a 1920s gangster named Frankie, and grounds him to her ancestral home. Saddled with a ghost, and no money in the hopes of keeping her house Verity takes a job for her exs brother black sheep Ellis Wydell. She is charged with the job of cleaning out a violent spirit from the restaurant that Ellis happens to be remodeling. Many hijinks ensue during the book which culminates in Ellis and Verity being embroiled in a decades old murder mystery. Will they solve they be able to solve mystery, and move the ghost on before the murder catches them!
I totally recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Mrs. Foxs work, and who also likes cozy mysteries of a ghostly nature. I cant wait to read the next book in this series.

Southern Spirits, Book #1 of the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries by Angie Fox
I want to go on record saying ... I don't like mysteries. And I'll be the first to admit, I was wrong. I found myself not wanting to put the book down. The book had a nice flow that kept my interest. The characters were likeable with a snarky ghost (or two) and a skunk. I agree with Verity, there should be Skunk Chow.
For those readers who complain about too many (or much) sex scenes in books. Here's the book for you. Other than a kiss or two, there is none ... so enjoy. In all honesty, the sex scenes weren't needed, in this story... to put them in would've stuck out like a sore thumb. I'm glad Ms. Fox decided to forego them. Without them, you got to get to know the characters better, not to mention got more of an actual story.
Now don't know if I'm not used to mysteries, but I didn't see it beforehand who was the crazy psychopath. It wasn't who I was expecting.
Can't wait to see where the series goes from here, got a feeling it's going to be fun!

Southern Spirits is the first in the Southern Ghost Hunters Mystery series and is a combination of the light paranormal and cozy genres. I don't usually read paranormal books but am so glad that I gave this one a try. I loved everything about this book from page one and was sorry to have to close the back cover.
Verity Long, graphic designer has dumped her wealthy ex fiancé at the altar due to his bad behavior. His family is embarrassed and decides to sue her for the exorbitant wedding costs in addition to spreading false rumors about Verity making her the town pariah. With nobody in town willing to give Verity work or a loan, she finds herself on the verge of having to sell her ancestral home.
Hoping to come up with as much money as she can, Verity holds an estate sale where everything except a dented old vase full of dirt and dust is sold. Verity has no idea that the dirt she dumps out into the rosebushes is actually the ashes of long dead Gangster Frankie the German. When Frankie appears to Verity he is irate that she has unintentionally "grounded" him and demands that she makes things right.
Frankie knows where money is buried on the grounds of a nearby abandoned, "haunted" house and talks Verity into going to dig it up. Little does she know that Frankie can also grant Verity the ability to see and talk to other ghosts. Hilarity ensues with her first spectral encounter and things go from bad to worse when Ellis Wydell, police chief and brother of the jilted ex busts her for trespassing.
When Verity accidentally reveals to Ellis that she has the ability to communicate with ghosts, he hires her to do a job for him. Ellis has bought an old abandoned property and something is methodically destroying all of his renovation work.
In her efforts to rid the property of ghosts and to earn the money she needs to save her own home, Verity stumbles on a decades long mystery with ties to the present. With the help of her younger sister Melody, best friend Lauralee and Frankie, Verity uncovers the dark secrets of a prominent townsman.
The characters, dialog and storyline are terrific. A fun, laugh out loud book that will keep you grinning from ear to ear from start to finish. Plus, you'll absolutely fall in love with Verity's pet skunk, Lucy. I read this book in one sitting and can only hope that there will be a second in the series. There is so much yet to be discovered - what will happen with Verity's house, her relationship with Ellis and does Frankie stick around to help her start a new career?

Verity Long has been having a rough time of it lately. When her cheater of a fiancé tried to force himself on her younger sister the night before the wedding, she called the whole thing off. But rather than take it like a man, Beau went ahead with the wedding to appear as if he were the victim, stood up at the altar, before the entire town. The town, Sugarland, Tennessee, took his side and his mother sued Verity for the wedding expenses (even the crazy extras that the mother-in-law-to-be had insisted on!) After having sold off all her possessions, Verity's still $20,000 in debt, and is having to put her beloved family home on the market as well. But then Frankie, the ghost of a long-dead, local gangster, shows up.
Due to humorous circumstances, Frankie is released from his final resting place (an unusual urn that no one would buy during the estate sale), and is now "attached" to Verity and her family home's property. Together, the two decide they must find a way to get the money to prevent the sale of the family home and figure out how to unstick Frankie from the property.
This is the first book in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series by Angie Fox. The characters are fun and witty, the dialogue snappy, and the action with all its twists and turns and surprises never stops. Verity is slowly working her way out of the hurt-filled place Beau left her with the help of her best friend, Lauralee, her pet skunk (yes, skunk), Lucy, her sister, Melody, Frankie, and the unexpected relationship blossoming between her and Beau's black-sheep brother, Ellis. Just a delightful quick read!
