A really great book. Well paced, though it drags just a bit towards the end.
A wonderful read.
Captain Kirk pretty much attains "superman" status in this novel. Adventure encompassed the Next Generation, Voyager and the original crew. Good story BUT I didn't appreciate the cliff hanging ending. tsk tsk.
The first Shatner Star Trek book I read was The Return, which was fantastic. So, I decided to pick up a few more of his books.
This book is Book 1 in Shatner's Mirror Universe Saga. It is followed by Dark Victory and then Preserver.
Overall, this book is only okay, but it is a setup book for a trilogy. The first 200 pages are a little slow. Kirk is not the Kirk of old. He keeps pining for his girlfriend Teilani over and over and over until you want to tear the book in two and burn it.
Then, somewhere around page 200, something clicks for Kirk and the book becomes fantastic for about the last 100-150 pages. High action, great Kirk-tastic moments, just a lot of fun. Really made me excited to read the second book, Dark Victory. Plus, of course, there is a big subplot about the Mirror Universe throughout which makes this a lot of fun.
Overall, I recommend it, but it's the beginning of a trilogy, so be prepared for that. And be prepared for Kirk to be a bit whiny the first 150-200 pages. It's still fun because you have characters like Picard, Bones and Scotty, but Kirk isn't really fun Kirk until about page 200.
Both Book 1 and Book 2 of this Mirror Universe trilogy have high action endings that leave you breathless for the next book.
