I'm fairly sure I read this around when it came out (1989) - but when I read it again in 2004, the only one I remembered was "Stealing Souls" - Laurell K. Hamilton's first-ever published story! It's really good - a tough female mercenary on a quest to free the imprisoned souls of her slain sisters, the bard who sings her praises - and a very, very demanding sword...
Funny - in the introduction, MZB tells Ms. Hamilton to stay away from those "cliched" elves... Even the best editors can't always be right! (Hamilton's made a load of cash off writing about elves!)
