Master storyteller Novik returns to a fantasy eastern Europe with this wonderful book. She's taken some elements from the Rumpelstiltskin story but this is not a simple re-telling. It's about love, and duty, sacrifice, prejudice, a little romance...it's lovely. So many layers to this; you can read it as a simple fairy tale, but look deeper. I read it straight through but I think it deserves a slower pace so you can appreciate better what she's done here. There are narratives from several different characters, all told in first person, so you'll have to pay attention as the chapters begin.
Beautifully written, Spinning Silver draws readers deeper into a realm of fantasy. A re-telling of Rumpelstiltskin but so much more! Miryem, Irina and Wanda embark on a desperate quest that will take them to the limits of sacrifice, power, and love. Novik weaves a multilayered, magical tapestry that readers will want to return to again and again. There are 6 POV but the 3 strongest are Miryem, Irina and Wanda. Highly recommend this one for all those who love fantasy, mixed with romance.
This a caring story about family, both born and created, and a suspenseful story about a war between two supernatural beings. This a story of 3 clever women who make their own way in a society that does not value women for more than their ability to birth children and cook. There are themes of economics, Judaica, and politics. I've only read one previous book by Novik, Uprooted, which I also enjoyed.
