A great book to read, I like fiction books that include pieces of history. This one about a family and history of China's revolution between late 1800's and early 1900's.
This is a very special book. I seldom read books twice, but have read this book several times. Wonderful character development, a fascinating story.

This was a very good book.
Outstanding novel about a Chinese woman born to a prominent family at beginning of the 20th century and the end of the Dynasties. Publisher's Weekly called it "a Chinese Gone With the Wind". And while Spring Moon is no Scarlett O'Hara, she also lives in a world of beautiful women and elegant men, of order and beauty and tradition all of which are swept away before the story's end.
This book takes the reader from the time of the end of dynastic rule to the time of Mao. Rich with the superstitious behavior of the old ways of the inhabitants of the Middle Kingdom, the author follows one woman as the changes come upon China and her family. If you're in the mood for a well-written book with good character development, and if you enjoy knowing more about a culture that was closed to the world, then you're going to enjoy reading this book.

A Chinese Gone With The Wind. - Publishers Weekly
this book tells the story of a Chinese family of wealth but Spring Moon is the daughter of a concubine and must struggle for learning and a place in of honor in her fathers family. It is a very interesting story and much is learned re Chinese culture
In this historical novel set in the 1930s, Lord follows the House of Chang, a dynasty of scholars and landowners, from the end of the Manchu Empire, through two Sino-Japanese wars, and the Communist takeover. As China changes, the members of the House of Chang must question their previously traditional roles; as the society based on family and patriarchy crumbles, the Chinese wedded to their traditions must cope with the needs of the masses over those of the individual, the education of women, and the authority of the state over all. The plot centers on Spring Moon, a woman pampered by the Chang dynasty, and Lustrous Jade, her daughter, educated by Western missionaries and who wholeheartedly espouses Communism.
