For Crystal Wyatt, growing up on a ranch in northern California, Hollywood was a dream...a dream that seemed a million miles away. Her beauty singled her out even in the remote rural valley where she was born... her sining had the power to move those around her to tears... her longing to explore the world beyond the valley drove on. And from the time she was fourteen, events would conspire to lead her to stardom. Not even the darkest scandals could keep her star from rising...even as it led her further from the man she had met and fallen in love with when she was barely more than a child.

For Spencer Hill, a handsome young officer returning from world War II. Crystal was a vision... a fourteen year old-girl whose beauty and radiance was a haunting but impossible presence. In spite of his doubts about what he really wanted, he would return to New York to become a lawyer. He would court and eventually marry the cool and determined Elizabeth Barclay, daughter of a Supremem Court Justice... and would find himself bound by professional, family and social ties that seemed unbreakable. But even as his star rose in Washington, in the brilliant circle that would become known as Camelot, his vision of Crystal held. And although he had chosen and chosen again as he watched her tranform from a glorious child into a beautiful, successful woman, he would be forced to make the final choice that could change his life forever, and cost him everything he had worked so hard to attain.

In time when men and women are driven to pursue their most ambitious goals, Danielle Steel probes the lives of two compelling characters who will achieve the heights in spite of the most daunting obstacles. And as the panoramic events of two trubulent decades unfold in Hollywood, Washington, and New York, she asks what really means to folow... to become... a star.

Her latest book begins in California just after World War II. At age 14, Crystal Wyatt's radiant beauty and singing talent have already aroused hostility in her narrow-minded rural community. When Spencer Hill meets Crystal at her sister's wedding, an unlikely yet magnetic attraction binds them. Spencer, 13 years Crystal's senior, comes from a distinguished Eastern family that is forcing him to shoulder his deceased older brother's political aspirations. Though he yearns for Crystal, Spencer enters into a loveless but socially and professionally advantageous marriage with Elizabeth Barclay, daughter of a Supreme Court justice. Soon he implores her for a divorce, but Elizabeth vehemently insists on maintaining appearances. Meanwhile, Crystal has achieved stardom in Hollywood, but her brutally possessive manager threatens violent reprisal if she ever tries to see Spencer.

Wonderful story of a young, beautiful girl who dreams of being a movie star. She has a very difficult childhood but escapes to Hollywood where she encounters good and evil and remembers the man she met when she was 14.

"Star" is a typical love story. A bit redundant at times and way too long. Not Ms. Steel's best work but readable.

It tells the unforgettable story of a woman and a man, each destined to illuminate the world, although in very different ways. For Crystal Wyatt - Hollywood was a dream. For Spencer Hill - Crystal was a vision... a fourteen-year-old whose beauty and radiance was a haunting but impossible.

Though Steel's ( Zoya ) novels showcase glamorous settings and turbulent romances, she writes convincingly about universal human emotions. In her portrayal of the reunion of this star-crossed couple, Steel displays the dramatic flourishes her fans savor.

I only read Steele occasionally as her books are so long for "romance". This one kept me interested.

Very good Danielle Steel book. It has lots of twist and turns and is very unpredictable. Just when you think you know what will happen next it changes. I really enjoyed it.

And I will say the same thing I said about all of my Danielle Steel books: These are addictive enough, and good for one read, but that's about it! That's why they're free. :)
