I agree with the other review. It felt a bit aimless. I started to get it mid-book, but I personally feel it shouldn't take so long for the pattern to emerge, especially when the dialog, while pretty & poetic, does not bring clarity as you go along. I struggled to finish this as my friend read it at the same time. While it wasn't a "slow" read, I found myself just not wanting to go back to it. It's like that point of the night where you realize you drank a bit too much & can't get steady footing, only to fall asleep and be confused when you are waking up.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern is not for everybody. For me, the book works. As the book states, "Sometimes life gets weird. You can try to ignore it or you can see where weird takes you." The book is different from much of what I have read except perhaps for Erin Morgenstern's first book. For both, I follow the weird, and it leads to an enjoyable reading experience.

I am so disappointed in this novel. The descriptions are gorgeous but the plot leaves a lot to be desired. I felt that the characters were wandering aimlessly throughout the entire book. I think the author also took on too many characters, ideas and time periods to make this a successfully interesting book. Just not my cup of tea.

Love story set in a secret underground world--a place of pirates, painters, lovers, liars, and ships that sail upon a starless sea. Zachary Ezra Rawlins is student in Vermont. He discovers a book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, he reads a story from his own childhood. How has his own life come to be recorded? Zachary uncovers clues--a bee, a key, and a sword--that lead to a doorway to an ancient library. It is a place of lost cities and seas, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary, Mirabel and Dorian work to preserve this archive. Zachary soon discovers his purpose--in both the mysterious book and in his own life.

A beautiful and well-written fantasy-filled story about stories with interesting characters and a plot that is a quest. It is a love letter to readers. A gem of a book with mystery and passion on every page. Highly recommended to those who love fantasy.
