This is the first in an award winning series of detective novels that take place in South Africa during the apartheid era. It's interesting to see the way the detectives(one partner is white and the other black) work together and relate to each other, despite the political situation in the country at that time.

The story is good, but having been written in 1939 the language and perspective is from another time and can be uncomfortable.
