The only reason I detracted a star was Jack's reason for marrying Lily at the story's beginning. He wouldn't say why he wanted to marry her, yet was adamant that the marriage take place. When he said his "reasons were his own," I felt that it was so bizarre that Lily was right to think he wasn't committed or serious. I can't imagine a woman accepting a proposal without some words of affection.
The beauty of this author's books is that both characters grow during the story, which produces a very satisfying result. Having been married 50+ years, I know marriage is a 1000 adjustments and compromises. A lack of communication is the easiest (and most likely) way to damage a relationship. Lily was more communicative (as most women are), but Jack was intelligent but closed. This makes for a difficult meeting of the minds.
As are all of M. A. Nichols' stories, this is a beautiful telling of a delightful story. Both main characters feel things deeply but struggle to communicate their innermost thoughts.

An emotional and tender romance between an insecure spinster and a reserved merchant who were caught in a compromising embrace. I grew a little frustrated with Jack over his inability to communicate his feelings, but I appreciated that he felt deeply. Lily, on the other hand, could not see her own worth or believe in the possibility that Jack may actually want her. The heartfelt, teary scenes where Jack and Lily struggled with their insecurities made up for the few lagging bits. It was an enjoyable read overall. 3.5 stars
