It's definitely up to each family as to when to introduce this book. While I felt it handled the topic appropriately, my husband wasn't sure it was appropriate for our 4 1/2 year old so we will have to decide as to whether we read it this year or next. But handles the topic well, in my opinion. Rather talk about it all along than have to do "the talk" later when they've heard who knows what from their peers, not to mention whatever is picked up from the culture.
