A good adventure stories, but a warning: about the middle of the book it gets INSANELY boring. The author was trying to stick close to reality. (She based the plot off of an actual voyage, thus there are really slow parts, like a typical sea voyage)
But if you can get through that part, the rest is better.

Caution: On page 83 of this book a native woman drops her lower clothing revealing her privey parts.

That might just be the worst of it. My thirteen year old son doesn't need it to get any deeper than that. Every parents different, but I thought some would at least appreciate the caution.

In 1768 Captain James Cook, sailed from England on a 3 year voage...A read sparkling with humor, and adventure.

My son who is in 5th grade loved this book. I also purchased the books on tape so that he could read along while listening. He borrowed an atlas to follow along on the journey and noted how the names of some of the places had changed. I think that without the tapes, he would have had a harder time getting into the book because of the way it is written.

The real Nicholas Young was 11 when he stowed away, therefore, I assume this for that age group, if you can find an 11 year old who will read a 300 page story (yeah, I don't know that many adults who will)
