Brilliant and dark. It's no surprise that this novel about an interracial love affair in Georgia in the 1920s is going to end in violence. The surprise is how carefully all the players are characterized -- with the odd exception of the woman. No hint or justification is given as to why a black woman with a college education would be satisfied to return to her home town and a life as a domestic servant. Nevertheless, it's a stunning read.
