From the first page, I could not put down this book! The story is unique. Three disreputable brothers happen upon a ranch and ask to water their horses and fill their canteens.
Being a generous soul, the owner, despite his wifes misgivings, invites them for a meal. While they are getting ready to leave, Zeke, the dangerous brother, decides to corner the wife Laura in the springhouse. The two kind ranch owners were dead or damaged when the 3 brothers left.
It is five years later and Caleb McCurdy, the youngest brother has left Yuma prison and is riding back to that house where they had destroyed lives. Caleb fell in love with her when he saw her that fateful day, but he has worried about her while in prison. He has to know what happened.
When he arrives at her house, she is still there on the (now) ramshackle ranch, with a loaded shotgun aimed at Caleb. He offers to do some work for a meal, which Laura reluctantly accepts.
Thus begins a story of forgiveness and redemption. These two characters are strong but have low self-esteem because of their history. This book is beautifully written and I would recommend it to anyone interested in a unique story.
