A wonderful, fictional story of Sacagawea from the time long before she met Captains Lewis and Clark, through their adventures together in the West, and the choice she made when they were leaving the West.

It's marked for readers aged 9 to 12, but I enjoyed it. It also won the Hans Christian Andersen Award, which according to its web site, is "the highest international recognition given to an author and an illustrator of children's books."

Wikipedia has a long article about Sacgawea and the studies made of her and what may have happened to her, plus information about her son. The latter actually spent six years in Europe, but returned to the U.S. From 1829 to his death in 1866 at age 61, he lived as a "western frontiersman."

I found it interesting that authorities differ on even the English spelling of her name. And according to Three Tribes, her name in English is Sakakawea. And you have to wonder how Donna Reed portrayed her in the 1955 movie "The Far Horizons." I checked the Internet Movie Database and she had her skin darkly colored each day before filming.
