This is the story of a young black woman with a young boy who struggles during the 1940s in Harlem. Her goal is to rise above poverty and to have her son get a good education and have good character and not be taken in by the "street" and its savory characters. Her obsession rules her life and eventually ruins it. It is well written and the characters come to life.
