John Grisham's ninth legal thriller opens with a bang, literally, when a grizzled and fragrant homeless man wanders into a Washington, D. C., law firm, takes nine attorneys hostage at gunpoint, and appropriates a vacant conference room to lecture on the importance of charitable contributions.
In the aftermath of the morning's unscheduled discussions, the 800-lawyer firm of Drake & Sweeney survives, but their uninvited guest does not. Michael Brock, one of the firm's rising young stars, comes away from his brush with death with a troubled conscience and a mental legal pad filled with unanswered questions. Who was this man, and what did he really want?
Michael decides to do some digging, and learns that his captor was a mentally ill veteran who'd been in and out of shelters for many years. But then he digs a little deeper and finds a dirty secret, a secret that involves Drake & Sweeney.
Disillusioned by his discoveries, Michael abruptly abandons the fast track and quits the firm, taking a top-secret file with him. He lands on the streets, an advocate for the homeless, a street lawyer...and a thief.

One of Grisham's better books. Very suspenseful and you definitely buy in to the main character and his mission.

I really liked the mystery and the live changing experience the main character is involved in. Very believable.
Although I found this story to be a bit unrealistic, it was an enjoyable read with great characters and a plot line that kept me wanting more.
I've read everything by John Grisham. Really enjoyed this one, too. Lawyering - what a strange profession!
One of his earlier books. A good thriller.
It's your typical John Grisham book...lots of suspence and drama.
Michael was in a hurry. He was scrambling up the ladder at Drake & Sweeney, a giant D.C. law firm with eight hundred lawyers. The money was good and getting better; a partnership was three years away. He was a rising star with no time to waste, no time to stop, no time to toss a few coins into the cups of panhandlers. No time for a conscience.
But a violent encounter with a homeless man stopped him cold. Michael survived; his assailant did not. Who was this man? Michael did some digging, and learned that he was a mentally ill veteran who'd been in and out of shelters for many years. Then Michael dug a little deeper, and found a dirty secret, and the secret involved Drake & Sweeney.
The fast track derailed; the ladder collapsed. Michael bolted the firm and took a top-secret file with him. He landed in the streets, an advocate for the homeless, a street lawyer.

Great Plot..keeps you on edge...good read
Great book, can't put down until your done!
Michael Brock is billing the hours, making the money, rushing relentlessly to the top of Drake & Sweeney, a giant D.C,. law firm. One step away from partnerhsip, Michael has it all. Then, in an instant, it all comes undone.
This is one of my all time favorite books. It is insightful, great characterization and an original plot. You won't be sorry.
Not my favorite Grisham legal thriller. This one has an uncharacteristic writing style that did not keep me interested as well as his other books. It was just ok.
Grisham... need I SAY MORE?
MORE GREAT GRISHAM
No doubt a solid book by Grisham, but not necessarily one of his best. He once again is not only telling a wonderful story, but trying to educate the reader on issues facing our society. What I really like about this book is its insight into how hard lawyers work and what they have to trade in order to be a partner in a firm. No doubt they will be heavily compensated, but what a price to pay! In addition, Grisham does a good job describing the plight of the homeless and how they are caught on the edge of society where they have no advocates and can be easily abused. Great story with many twists, especially with the intense court case that is the center of the book.
Fast paced, exciting read.
I loved this book and couldn't put it down!
Super Book!!!!!!!
Back of book: A homeless man takes nine lawyers hostage in the firm's plush offices. When it is all over, the man's blood is splattered on Michael's face - and suddenly Michael is willing to do the unthinkable. Rediscovering a conscience he lost long ago, Michael is leaving the big time for the streets where his attacker once lived - and where society's powerless need an advocate for justice.
"A suspense novel with a social conscience... the true strength of the novel is that it deals with a serious social issue - homelessness - a topic the author addresses with genuine sympathy and considerable earnestness."

Excellent story! a must-read book!
A different take from Grisham's usual but still a page-turning read!
Michael Brock is making his way up to a partnership in a prestigious Washington law firm. A homeless man takes nine of the lawyers hostage, and is killed during the battle to free his hostages. Michael turns his back on the big law firm and takes to the streets- where he plans to help society's powerless find justice. But Michael takes with him a secret which has floated up from the depths of the law firm; a confidential file is in his hands. His former partners have become bitter enemies...now Michael is the most dangerous man on the streets.
an excellant read
a homeless man takes 9 lawyers hostage
I always like John Grisham but this book especially touched me and opened my eyes to a very serious problem we have in this country!
An OK book. Not Grisham's best.
One of the best Grisham books I have read. Wish I had found it sooner!
Great read!
I really enjoyed this book, as I have all of Grisham's books so far!!

This book was very good. A Lawyer making the big bucks decides to give it all up.
An attorney is followed into the elevator of his lavish office building by a transient, not knowing that his life will be forever changed by one unforgettable encounter...
A very compelling story.

This is a very interesting listen. Good story.
Husband likes all the Grisham books.
A great one...Grisham is always good on audio...the picture for this shows a differen cover...this is The Street Lawyer by Grisham.
I enjoyed this book, although I found that it did not draw me in to read it quickly. When I walked away from the book I could be away for long periods of time, yet while reading I found it thrilling. So for that reason I can't say it was wonderful. I like a book that does not allow for long periods of time away. Characters are well developed and likable. There are loose ends that I feel never materialized, but overall a good book.
Typical Grisham - excellant read.
After starting to read this book, I realized that I had read it before a long time ago as I have read most of John Grisham's works. However, I did finish it as I found it enjoyable all over again!
Following a hostage experience, a divorce, and a jolt of his company's role in a messy eviction, a corporate lawyer finds himself disillusioned and adrift. He begins a journey to find a new purpose for his life and his law degree.
Love Grisham's books - can never put them down!
Very good story and written with Grisham's usual skill. Highly recommend.
I really liked this book. The big shot lawyer on the road to riches gets sort of derailed by one event and then....OK, you'll have to read it yourself. I could tell that lots of research must of been done concerning the homeless in the Washington, DC area. There are lots of realistic details that I'm sure are true about this area of the city. The story keeps you rivited and I was even able to remember what was going on after a break in reading it, and able to continue and finish it. A sign of a good story.
What can I say about a John Grisham book? Fantastic!
I really liked this book because of Grisham's social conscience that came through. It really made me think about people who are homeless and those who work for small pay to help them. Also made me grateful for lawyers and others who take pro bono cases and for medical personnel who volunteer hours at free clinics. The Street Lawyer, I thought, was excellent for those reasons.
I was not a fan of John Grisham before this book. It's a thought provoking story that leaves the reader feeling content. It makes a person really wonder where their own priorities are.
Excellent novel once again by Grisham. Its tough to put down once you start it !
This book is a real page turner. I throughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone.
Michael Brock, a successful young attorney for a large, prestigious law firm in Washington, DC, is taken hostage by a homeless veteran in the dramatic opening chapter of Grisham's novel. An entertaining read.
Another great Grisham legal story. This one focuses on the poor and homeless. Very thought provoking.
Michael Brock is a big time lawyer in D.C. at a giant law firm. A homeless man takes nine lawyers hostage at the firm. When it is all over, the man's blood is splattered on Michael's face- and suddenly Michael is willing to to do the unthinkable. Rediscovering a conscience he lost long ago, Michael is leaving the big time for the streets where his attacker once lived- and where society's powerless need an advocate for justice. Great Book!
"An entertaining read with an important theme" -- Chicago Sun-Times
This is a timely and urgent theme. While I'm reading Grisham's story centered on the homeless people in Washington, D.C. I follow the story in my daily newspaper of the homeless' tent city in St. Petersburg, FL and the city's efforts to evict them.

Love Grisham
Grisham is a wonderful writer, making things come alive you may never have thought about.
My favorite of the John Grisham stories. I couldn't put it down!
Great read, as is everything of John Grisham's.
This was probably one of my favorite John Grisham books. Michal Brock, despite being a well-off attorney, was very likable and easy to relate to. He is involved in an incident that is a life changing event, and he has to re-examine who he is and what he is doing. It was a very quick read and very believable.
one of grisham's best. great story.
This is one of my all-time favorite John Grisham book. It's suspenseful and well written. I highly recommend this to any John Grisham fan.
John Grisham's books are some of my favorites. His stories keeps you on the edge so that you must keep reading to find out what is going to happen. This one is certainly no different. It is well worth you time.
Excellent book that pulls you in on the very first page. Very gripping.
Another exciting Grisham tale. Fun reading and suspenseful to the end.
Also like to read John Grisham.
When the lawyer loses everything and winds up on the streets, things go from bad to worse and danger lurks everywhere.
I liked it...though I would like to have heard more people who think the homeless aren\'t necessarily \"victims\"
This is a quick and interesting read. Makes you think you should be doing more for your fellow man too. That passes though.
Great book.
My very favorite Grisham book.
Learning about Lawyers and what they do and Solving Crimes is what he did.
Good book - couldn't put it down.
really loved this story as seen through the eyes of a successful lawyer who goes on the streets to solve a secret involving his law firm and becomes a street lawyer... very very enjoyable!

A Grisham classic! Self-centered, money-hungry young lawyer turns into philatropist after a dramatic incident in which a homeless man takes nine lawyers hostage and makes them question their humanity.
Typical Grisham. Light and quick legal fiction.
I enjoyed this book. It was my first John Grisham book but not my last.
This book is very descriptive and keeps you interested for the first few chapters. After that, it slows down a bit to catch up on backstory and details you otherwise wouldn't need. However, if you are a Grisham lover, you will want to add this book to your collection.
Although a well done Audiobook abridgement, nicely read by Michael Beck, the story itself is filled with cardboard stereotyped characters, unsubstantiated partisan political opinions, and bad dialogue in many chapters masquerading as (poor) imitations of Hemingway. And the "happily ever after" ending was over-the-top and not believable at all.
Great, suspensful book.
michael brock is billing the hours, making the money, rushing relentlessly to the top of drake and sweeny, a giant d.c. law firmmichael has it all ,thenin a n instant it all comes undone.
Excellent book, I really enjoyed it!
I DO have two smokers in my home, so please take that into consideration if you have smoke sensitivities.
Not quite the page-turner of Mr. Grisham's other books, The Street Lawyer is still engaging and intriguing. Mr. Grisham handles the issue of homelessness with a measure of sympathy rarely seen.

A MUST READ!!!
Here is another timely story from John Grisham. This ninth novel of his shows not only that Grisham has his finger on the public pulse, but that he's also out to prick its conscience. An interesting protagonist, a successful big-firm lawyer survives a hostage situation and redefines himself.
All Grishams books are excellent, this one is no exception.
one of the most enthralling grisham books i have read.

particularly liked this one.
Michael Brock has a cushy job at a big, expensive law firm in Washington, D.C. The firm's newest client is a real estate developer with plans to take over a housing area currently occupied by a group of vagrants. When Michael learns that his firm is plotting against the homeless, he quickly switches loyalties and opts to represent the homeless group against the real estate corporation. Only, Michael soon learns that playing against the big boys isn't quite the same game as being part of the team. Even worse, the next around may be deadly.
It is an interesting story and as fast-paced as typical Grisham books. I enjoyed it very much.
Not one of Grishams, best, but still a good story.
Husband read this and loved it!
Looking for a romantic, hardboiled legal drama with a social conscience? Look no further. This audio version of John Grisham's blockbuster The Street Lawyer is narrated by Michael Beck (The Golden Seal, Xanadu), whose portrayal of the similarly named Michael Brock, with his squeaky-clean voice and crisp annunciation, is in perfect pitch with the corporate attorney's Ivy League image. Beck's believable, engaging performance is compelling, drawing the listener into Brock's charmed life and his decision to quit the firm after being held hostage by a disgruntled homeless man. Moved by a crisis of conscience, Brock seeks out the gravel-throated, streetwise legal aid counselor Mordecai Green. Green shows him the ropes, and Brock soon becomes part of the scenery he used to look down on from his plush 14th-floor office. Meanwhile, our hero is on the lam for stealing an important file that holds the secret to an illegal eviction--one that may lead to a murder charge. Faced with a failing marriage, a client on crack, and the threat of disbarment, Michael has plenty to think about as he and Mordecai negotiate a fair settlement for the victims of an inexcusable crime.
One of his best.
Not my favorite Grisham novel, but still an interesting read.
Love Grisham's books!
Its a Grisham !
Another excellent exciting and intriguing book from John Grisham! Great story about a high-priced lawyer who goes over to the "dark side" and represents the homeless and helps many. Very good tale...
Great book, lots of twists and turns and a very happy ending. Grisham at his best...
what a beauty first one i've read such a good theme.
