I would never want to serve on a submarine, yet I am fascinated by submarine warfare. Having read a large number of books about this subject, especially the WW II era, I can states that "Submarine Diary' is truly exceptional. The author was in submarines, stationed at Manila, when the war began and he served on nine patrols until early summer, 1945.

His experiences, as recorded in his diary, are honest and engaging.
