I just recently discovered Lisa Kleypas and I am hooked. I don't even really like historicals, but there are no shy, wimpy, virginal heriones in her stories. Kleypas also somehow creates these wonderful, caring but strong heros. Strong, erotic sex scenes and deeply emotional storylines at the same time. This one is one of my favorites.

Successful novelist Amanda Briars buys herself a scandalous present to celebrate her 30th birthday. Of gentle birth, unwed, and still a virgin, she contracts with a well-known madam to deliver a lover to her home. When handsome publisher Jack Devlin knocks on her door, it doesn't take him long to figure out that Amanda thinks he's someone else entirely. Intrigued, he stops just short of taking the lady's virginity, for he has other plans for the talented writer.

When she discovers Jack's true identity at a gathering of writers and publishers, Amanda is first angry, then fascinated, as he is a powerful force in the London publishing industry. Jack is determined to court Amanda not only to publish her novels, but also to lure her into his bed, and it isn't long before the two are deeply involved. But their path to happiness is strewn with stumbling blocks: Jack has a past that haunts him, while Amanda's family would be hurt by a scandalous liaison.

Suddenly You is a lush, deeply romantic tale of two free spirits who learn that they are, after all, susceptible to the binding ties of love. The setting provides readers with a different view of London society--the lives of affluent writers and artists rather than the world of the nobility--and a fascinating look into the publishing industry in 1800s London.

I really enjoyed this book. It was not a "typical" romance considering the way the met. I really appreciated the authors insight into what life must have been like for a woman wanting a career and independence in the 1800's.

from inside cover---
The bestselling author creates a beguiling story set in a world where appearance means everything, passion simmers just below the surface, and a respectable Englishwoman is willing to risk scandal for one night of love.
She was unmarried, untouched and almost 30, but novelist Amanda Briars wasn't about to greet her next birthday without making love to a man. When he appeared at her door, she believed he was her gift to herself, hired for one night of passion. Unforgettably handsome, irresistibly virile, he tempted her in ways she never thought possible... but something stopped him from completely fulfilling her dream.
Jack Devlin's determination to possess Amanda became greater when she discovered his true identity. But gently bred Amanda craved respectability more than she admitted, while Jack, the cast-off son of a nobleman and London's most notorious businessman , refused to live by society's rules.Yet when fate conspired for them to marry, thier worlds collided with a passionate force neither had expected...but both soon craved.

This was such a wonderful story. It made me so happy. The spinster finds confidence in herself and the scoundrel finds marriage to be a good thing. I related with Amanda so much. This is definitely one of Kleypas's best ever.

Amanda Briars is a sensational novelist. She's also a spinster. When she turns 30 years old she takes her situation in hand and goes to a madam to hire a man for her birthday. The man who shows up at her door, though, stops short of fulfilling his duty. He won't take her innocence.
Jack Devlin is definitely an alpha hero. He determines to have Amanda but not under false pretenses. He uses her pent up desires and some strong body language against her on several occasions. At the same time, he feels unworthy of her and fights himself every step of the way.
The chemistry in this book is very strong. Actually flushed face, squirming strong. I have to say most erotica with all of the explicit description doesn't come near what is accomplished with tension in this book.

Finally someone writes a book where the leading lady is not slim and beautiful. I skipped over a lot of the sex scenes, they become tiresome and boring, but I liked the story line.

This is one of Lisa Kleypas' better books. Jack and Amanda are very realistic and make a great couple. Kleypas throws in issues that every woman can relate to (particularly the part about being involved with a younger man) which really elevate this book and give it a sense of emotional truth that every romance novel should have.

This is a funny, sensitive, and sensual book that any avid romance reader will love.

excellent bedroom scenes, but the plot was.....different. there's no "bad guy" in this book, the characters are not your usual "romance novel" types, but the story was excellent. Love between an older female author and a young publisher.

I recently re-read this book and I think I liked it better on second reading than the first. It is a wonderful love story about a spinster who is also an acclaimed writer. Through an unusual circumstance she meets Jack, the hero, and they slowly build up to a very steamy affair. The pacing is nice, the development of them as a couple is convincing and romantic. Kleypas includes some more risque acts in some of the love scenes which made this book unique. Overall, it was a sweet, romantic, seductive story.

Set in London in 1836, this historical romance by the all time great Lisa Kleypas is one of her best works. The heroine isn't perfect and has plenty of flaws in her appearance, and the hero loves her despite of it.

Not about to hit 30 without knowing the love of a man, Amanda Briars hires a man for one night. But Jack Devlin never goes through with it, instead he treats her courteously and ends up thinking about nothing but her. Their's is a love that is destined and will make you sigh with contentment. I personally loved this book, and any fan of historical romance does not need to miss this one.

1836 England. Interesting and original plot. Heroine (novelist) is 29 and "untouched" so she hires what she believes is a male prostitute. She doesn't follow through, but later finds out he wasn't who she thought. Their lives tangle and they fall in love...
