The characters come alive so easy for Chiaverini. I just love her works. I consider this the first book in her series only because of the timeline. Story takes place prior to the Civil War and gives you a grounding to the Elm Creek saga. If you love to quilt you can't help but love these easy to read novels.

In the seventh entry in the Elm Creek Quilt series, Chiaverini returns to Creek's Crossing, Pennsylvania, in the period before the Civil War, when quilts were used as markers along the Underground Railroad. Nineteen-year-old Dorothea Granger, dutiful daughter and niece, teaches at the local school, the closest she can come to fulfilling her dreams of education and career. Her younger brother, Jonathan, is studying medicine in Boston and is seen as the likely heir to the farm where her family lives under the scrutiny of cantankerous Uncle Jacob. When her uncle asks Dorothea to make him a quilt with very specific instructions, she obeys but is intrigued and annoyed at the request, as it takes her away from the task of quilting to raise funds to build a library and wondering about the intentions of a potential suitor and a mysterious newcomer. The Granger family and their small town become increasingly torn by encroaching efforts to round up or to assist runaway slaves.

My favorite Elm Creek Quilters book thus far. At first I thought I might miss the normal characters from the Elm Creek series but the characters in this book were so rich it was lacking nothing.

This is my favorite of the Elm Creek Quilters series. I couldn't put it down. Interesting history lessons involving the years right before the Civil War. This story is mysterious, couragous, romantic with a lot of "daring" thrown in.

Another great book from Jennifer Chiaverini. I have read all the books that she has written so far and can't wait to get the next one. If you like quilting or even ifg you don't this book is for you. So much fun to read. You should read the rest of them also.

I enjoyed this book very much. The Elm Creek books are always well written and intrigueing but I especially like the ones that focus on the 19th century and the family's inovlvement with the Underground Railroad. This one did not disappoint. It provided a good overview of the beginning of the family, before they began raising thoroughbreds.

This book, 7th in the series, does not feature any of the characters from the Elm Creek Quilters, but it is a prequel to "The Runaway Quilt". This could easily be a standalone book for anyone interested in stories about the Underground Railroad. Lots of interesting historical detail! Good read, but if you want more about the Elm Creek Quilters you will be disappointed and just skip this book and move on to the next one.

Another in the Elm Creek Quilters series, this is one of the historical novels rather than one focusing on the present-day quilters. This story focuses on the tension between the Abolitionist and the slavery-supporting factions in the town. Well-paced, suspenseful, full of great characters.

Interesting book, it fills in a lot of historical facts that are exciting to read from the days of slavery and how the families in that small town assisted or hindered the movement of escapees to Canada. It related to the previous books in the series very well and I would recommend it.

This spinoff of the story of the Elm Creek family and homestead was especially enjoyed. I live not far from this area of Pennsylvania and can picture the places and history. 5 Stars !
