OH MY OH MY... I originally got this book from the library, HOWEVER, after reading chapter 7, I knew it was going to be a favorite and purchased it. Lisa Kleypas is such a gifted writer. This is my first book of hers, and I can't wait to read more books by her, historical or contemporary.
I wasn't sure I would enjoy reading a book in first person, but I did. I felt everything Liberty felt, anger, frustration, butterflies, pain, tiredness and tears. This story was especially enjoyable, as I could appreciate all that she went through.
If you have not read this story, it's in paperback now, GO GET IT.

Loved this book..her first Contemp. and it lives up to her reputation

This was an awesome book. I couldn't believe how quickly I read this! I don't read a lot of romance because you typically get some mushy, sex-ridden book with no plot. This book had just the right amount of romance with lots of content and character building. Loved the closure at the end and of course the very happy ending. Great read and looking forward to Blue-Eyed Devil!
If you enjoyed this book you might also like Lucky's Lady by Tami Hoag. I really enjoyed it.

Absolutely loved it! Read it in one day. She kept me interested until the very end. Kudos for Kleypas!

I was impressed by this book. Kleypas is not my favorite writer although I do enjoy a few things by her. She has a tendency to reuse characters and plotlines and I find that insulting. Albeit she did fall back on illness as a form of bonding here (she uses it in her historic romances a lot), I didn't mind it as much because it wasn't so melodramatic.
If you are looking for a typical romance, you will be surprised. This is more like a Cinderella story. So the first half of the book is set in Liberty's teenage years and her relationship with Hardy. I actually loved this part of the book because so much of what happened formed who she is as an adult. I thought Kleypas took a risk by spending a lot of time here when Liberty might not end up with Hardy at the end, but it was worth it to me. So much of this book is really just about Liberty and how she dealt with life (in some ways more like chick lit than romance).
The second part of the story is mostly about Liberty being flung full-fledge into adulthood when her mother dies and she has to take care of her little sister. Kleypas did a great job of showing how although Liberty was already more of a mother than a sister beforehand, there is a huge difference in being soley responsible for a young child. Gabe enters on in the later half and I felt their relationship was somewhat rushed compared to what was spent on Hardy, but it was still good. Of course Hardy returns and tries to win Liberty back and she has to picked between two millionaires. (Hard to feel sorry for a girl with choices like that).
I spent so much time in this review breaking down the book because I can't emphasis enough that it isn't written as your typical romance. It works here because it is written in Liberty's perspective and the reader needs to know why it was hard for her to choose between the two men, especially because Hardy played such a major role in her life.
Good book. The two books that follow in the series are more typical romances and I'm glad I read them first. If I read this one first, I don't think I would have liked them as much.

This book was okay. Not your typical Kleypas, but I was definitely curious to see how this one would be. Contemporary romance written in first-person perspective. Except I think the romance fell flat. It seemed to me more like a story of a girls life, beginning with adolescence and wrapping up pretty quickly after the main character and her eventual husband get together.

I didn't guess the family secret... Pretty well done.

Having read this book now three times, I must modify my original review. Kleypas is a great writer. This is a departure from her typical historical-romance books and also written in the first person. Usually we see the perspectives of both hero and heroine but using first person, we are involved in only one character's life.
Maybe we spent too much time on Liberty's youth - it began to feel a bit more Danielle Steel than Lisa Kleypas. I liked Liberty's story with Hardy and you certainly felt sorry for the both of them. But I kept wishing she'd move things along. Yet in my re-reads, I really enjoy the backstory more each time and see so much more depth to Kleypas as a writer than ever before in her historical fiction.
That said, later in the book, as we got to know Churchill and then Gage, I think the pacing got better and you were wondering until the very end whom Liberty would wind up with.
Honestly some of the best parts of the book are the descriptions of food. Kleypas always gives great attention to the sights and smells and sounds around the characters, but she's taken it to a new level with her food porn. Who knew that something as simple as chicken and dumplings could read like foreplay?

Lisa Kleypas is a surprisingly good writer. I loved Sugar Daddy and the Sequel Blue Eyed Devil. Not only a great romance novel, but a wonderful, heartfelt story.
If you love western romances you will love this. Set in modern times it is a great love story. You get to know the main character really well through out the book. You really grow with her as the book unfolds. Lets not forget the COWBOYS in the story. A page turner that leaves wanting to read all of Lisa Kleypas books!!!
Wow. Just.....wow. Not what I expected. Pretty heavy, but, amazing. I will admit to skimming some parts in the middle of the book, finding the long back story just a little too long for me. But, even that didn't take away from the richness of the story. One that I thought about when I wasn't reading it. Excellent. Wonderful. 5 stars.
Great book, loved the characters. Paced well and well written. If you love this book, you won't be disappointed with Blue eyed devil a continuation of the series with more of these great characters.
I loved this book and like the other review I read I also read it in record time. Great book !!!!
Liberty Jones has loved Hardy Cates since she was 15, but Hardy saw her as off-limits. When Hardy leaves town to pursue his life plans, Liberty finds herself alone with a young sister to raise. Soon she is befriended by a older man, a billionaire who offers her a job at his home. His oldest son, Gage, thinks Liberty is a gold-digger looking for a sugar daddy. But secrets from the past soon come out...and Liberty will have to pick between the two men in her life.
This story had many elements that I don't like in my books---Hundreds of pages of background story, H/h don't meet until past the middle of the book, and a love triangle. Yet, I loved it. This book is written in the first-person point-of-view and you feel everything that Liberty is going through. You couldn't help but root for her and wonder which man she would pick in the end. Can't wait to read the next book in the series. My rating: 5 Stars.

Great read, storyline and lovable characters! The story moved along smoothly with some plot twists and a great ending. I am looking forward to the next in the series "Blue Eyed Devil"
Love this book.
I wanted to like this better than I actually did. The heroine spends the majority of the book growing up and hung up on another man. There was little to no development in the relationship between the "hero" and the heroine.
She's from the wrong side of the tracks and he's the one man she can't have. Lisa Leypas shines as she tells the story of Liberty Jones who falls under the spell of a billionaire tycoon - a Sugar Daddy as they say. But the relationship goes deeper than people think and Liberty begins to discover secrets about her own family's past.
Lisa Kleypas usually writes hostorical romance, which for the most part isn't my cup of tea. I do however love this book, her first contemporary romance. It was engaging and real.
I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more of her work.
I'm a big fan of Kleypas's historical novels, but I avoided this book for a long time because very few authors can do both genres well. Plus, I don't much like first person point of view. But boy, was I glad I finally picked it up. This turned out to be a great book, although it starts out a little slow, spending time on the heroine's childhood.
The hero is hot! I recommend all 3 of the books in this series, read them in order.
