My favorite of Carolyn Haines. Excellent characters woven into a mysterious summer in the south.

A well-written, interesting book. I enjoyed it and wished it hadn't ended. I was unfamiliar with the author, but I will be looking for more of her books. 5 stars

This is the second time that I have read this....I love this story narrated by 13 year old Beckah, growing up in rural Mississippi in the summer of 1963. From going swimming in Cry Baby Creek and hanging out with her best friend Alice to spying on The Redeemers...a church group who moves into an abandoned church down at the end of Bekah's road...Kali Oka Rd. where she has lived all of her life, her "safe place". That summer everything changes....
