Summer Sisters is an adult read about two friends from young through adult, Caitlin stays on Martha's Vinyard every summer with her father and has invited Vix from Santa Fe to stay and this becomes an every summer happening. Vix becomes a part of this privileged family through these summer visits so the family pay her Harvard education while Caitlin is the wild one who chooses to live the lavish life in Europe instead of school. It is a good fast read.

I loved this book; I did not want it to end. It starts out rather slow but after a few chapters it picks up nicely. It made me laugh and made me cry. I wish Judy Blume would do a sequel to it.

I didn't really care for this book. I thought that the way the book was written was confusing. At least Judy Blume puts each name at the top of the pages so that you can following who is thinking and saying what. I thought that there were too many characters to keep track of - I kept getting them mixed up with who belonged to whom. I really didn't like the way the book ended - to much like a television series finally (never really tied up the loose ends).
Beware: This is definately an adult book with a great deal of references to adult themes.

Since this is the first "adult" novel I have read from one of my favorite childhood authors, I was ill-prepared for some of the mature content, and found myself blushing, especially near the beginning of the book (this book is NOT intended for the audience of "Blubber!") However, Blume's writing style has changed very little from her young adult novels, making this an easy read, and I absolutely loved the story of two girls tied by a childhood bond, yet struggling through their relationship as they matured. Victoria's character is especially authentic and relatable, and my heart went out to her as she dealt with the betrayals of a friend she loved dearly.

Read this in highschool when I was visiting Martha's Vineyard, where the book takes place. A great read then... will read again soon i am sure. A great adult read from my childhood fav author Judy Blume.

This book is my all time favorite book. It reminds me of one of my friends and me growing up. The book discusses two friends and their lives throughout the years, how they intertwine and grow apart from each other. The girls learn from each other's mistakes and betrayal of the friendship. I usually read this book once or twice a year because it is a very intriguing book. I usually don't like books that switch off from the past and back to the present, but this book has a natural flow that doesn't confuse or frustrate the reader.

As a Judy Blume fan in my teen years, it was interesting to find that she could jump from one generation to the next in her writing. Loved this book and was happily surprised that I could still read Judy Blume at my age! Summer Sisters is amazing.

Growing up a Judy Blume fan, I was sure she was the only woman alive who truly understood how it felt to be a fourth grader. Later in life, I was convinced she was the only "young adult" author who knew just what it was like to be a teenaged girl on the verge of womanhood. Now, I have no doubt in my mind that Judy Blume understands being a woman better than any writer, any artist, and she has shown us this in the pages of Summer Sisters.
I've never read a book so many times in my life.

Great book, I wish Judy Blume would write more "adult" books.

Typical story about the relationship between two girls who were childhood friends, but something happened so they went their separate ways and reunite as adults. Judy Blume does an awesome job of filling in the details. Heartbreaking at times. I didn't know Judy Blume had any "adult" books, and this one pleased me as a grown-up just as much as her "Fudge" books did as a kid.
Helpful Score: 3
A weird but honest story about a toxic friendship between two girls. The story starts off awkwardly but grows into heart-breaking tale about their relationship.
Helpful Score: 2
A really good book, no doubt. But I'm not sure if there is anyone who is so flat as a character as Caitlin in real life. She's sort of like how someone would draw a bad girl, if they had never actually known (or been) a bad girl themselves. And this question kept popping up in my head throughout the book: why did Victoria stay? That also seemed out of character.
Anyway, this is a review, not a character discussion. And as a review I highly recommend this book. I did thoroughly enjoy it. Would love to see the movie adaptation some day!

This novel was excellent from the beginning page until the end. Caitlin, a wild child, invites Vix, who is more conservative and quiet, to Martha's Vineyard for the summer. Summer after summer the girls return to the vineyard and as a reader, you literally are apart of their growth into woman hood. They experience new things together, first love, development of their bodies, and even "The Power" which they use on one another.
The story opens in the present day, with a phone call from Caitlin asking, more like telling, Vix if she will be the Maid of Honor at her Wedding. Then the story goes back to Vix and Caitlin's summer days, and all the events leading up to Caitlin's Marriage.
As the two girls mature to woman hood their differences tear them apart, especially when it comes to dating boys. Caitlin knows she is intimidating, and she uses that to her advantage. Vix; however, is the complete opposite.
Caitlin becomes too wrapped up in herself, and selfishly ruins Vix's sixteenth birthday party. Vix, devastated and hear-broken, leaves to live on her own, breaking off her friendship with Caitlin. Or so she wishes.
Summer Sisters was a hard book to put down. The characters were so real and I associated with a lot of the story. I felt apart of the characters lives as they grew up together, experiencing all the new things life brought them. The plot kept me interested throughout the entire book.
It's a story numerous teenage girls, and older women can relate too. It leaves a reader crying and laughing all at the same time.

My first Judy Blume novel, and I'm not sure if I liked it or not!! The premise of the story is good, two friends, how they change and grow from the sixth grade to adulthood. How to explain Caitland... I can't, even she can't explain herself, and I guess that's the part I didn't like. She really not a very likable person, but Vix [Victoria] just keeps putting up with her. I don't think I could have.

From Booklist
Although Blume has published two adult novels, Wifey (1978) and Smart Women (1985), she remains best known as the groundbreaking author of middle-grade and young-adult books, including Are You There God? It's Me Margaret (1972). Her latest effort, although published as an adult book, could just as easily have been on a YA list. It is, after all, the story of a teenage friendship between two girls, one rich, one poor, and it traces what happens to them as they grow up and eventually grow apart. The majority of the book covers the summers the girls spend together from ages 13 to 18 on Martha's Vineyard. Blume remains a pithy writer. Her dialogue is realistic, and her plotcoming-of-age slathered with jealousymoves right along through family troubles, boyfriends, college, and eventually, marriage. But Blume has also covered much of this materialmenstruation, masturbation, first sexual affairsin her books for young teens. Clearly, this book (which begins in the 1970s, Blume's heyday) was designed to welcome her now grown-up readers into the world of adult fiction. The problem is, most of them probably arrived there a long time ago. What we have here is a marketing ploy: the YA novel masquerading as an adult book in order to widen its audience and capitalize on the author's name. Ironically, though, the audience who will most appreciate the trials and tribulations of friends Victoria and Caitlin as they try to grow up are the very people Blume seems trying so hard to get away from--teenage girls.

The story of a rather one-sided friendship is told in Judy Blume's SUMMER SISTERS. Victoria (Vix) meets Caitlin as young schoolmates, and for some reason although the two of them are worlds apart, Caitlin chooses Vix as her guest to summer with her family on Martha's Vineyard. Vix has always been the quiet one, and Caitlin is the wild and crazy one. And despite their differences, Vix seems to be attracted to Caitlin's life, including her family and Caitlin's' rather eccentric ways.
The story opens in the present (1990), with Vix receiving a call from Caitlin, saying she's inviting Vix to her wedding. The brief prologue sets the stage, with Vix a bit perturbed by the phone call and torn between being angry with Caitlin, but also thinking "summer sisters forever". It is obvious that there is a love-hate relationship between the two, or at least that is how Vix feels about her long time friend Caitlin.
Their summers together on Martha's Vineyard are full of fun and laughter. But as they get older, Caitlin's selfishness starts to show. Vix however takes it all without too much complaining, always finding reasons to forgive Caitlin. Caitlin's selfish behavior is not obvious to all, but are subtle and often times happen in shocking ways.
As the two start to meet and date boys, Caitlin's behavior in this department is directly opposite in the way Vix handles herself with the boys, and on one night, Vix celebrates her birthday with Caitlin and the boys and it ends up a disastrous moment for Vix. (Caitlin, on the other hand, sees nothing wrong with what she has done, and thinks it's all in good fun).
As the two girls become young women, their differences tear them apart. Their friendship, which Vix always treasured, seems to be on a rocky road to disaster. Caitlin's father and his new wife are taken by Vix and try their best to mend the friendship, but Vix has been hurt enough. She goes off on her own, and cuts her ties with Caitlin. Or so it seems.
SUMMER SISTERS was a great summer read. The plot kept my interest throughout the book, and the characters felt real and I cared about what happened to them. Judy Blume did a good job with the story of two friends and their ever-changing relationship from childhood to adulthood. It was also a good character study about two girls from different backgrounds, and the events and people that can shape a child into the adult she is today.

A story of childhood summer friendship, continues when Caitlin gets married and wants Vix to be her maid of honor. Vix knows she will go-for the friend whose casual betrayals she remembers all too well. Because Vix wants to understand what happened during that last shattering summer. And, after all these years, she needs to know why her best friend-her summer sister-still has the power to break her heart.....

Here is an entertaining adult fairy tale...with engaging characters, an intriguing plot and plenty of sex. Judy Blume catches the well-armored love between longtime female friends. Blume's characters still tend to hover after the book is set aside, proving that this talented realist continues to do what she does best.
In the summer of 1977, Victoria Leonard's world changed forever - when Caitlin Somers chose her as a friend. Dazzling, reckless Caitlin welcomed Vix into the heart of her sprawling yard, a magical, wind-blown island where two friends became summer sisters.
Now years later, Vix is working in New York City. Caitlin is getting married on the Vineyard. And the early magic of their long, complicated friendship has faded. But Caitlin has begged Vix to come to her wedding, to be her maid of honor. And Vix knows that she will go - for the friend whose casual betrayals she remembers all too well. Because Vix wants to understand what happened during that last shattering summer. WAS A GREAT BOOK. I did not put it down until I was finished.
I like Judy Blume, but I did not care for this book. The plot of the book was ok, I think the ending could have been better.
This book started out well then ended tragically. I'm almost sorry I read it.
I couldn't put it down. I loved Judy Blume as a kid and I love her even more as an adult.
At first I was wondering if I would still like Judy Blume, being (at least) 20 years older than the last time I read a Judy Blume book. Judy didn't let me down! It was a great read - had its surprises, sad moments, happy, etc.
A fun book for your 2007 beach bag.
This had to be one of my favorite stories ever!! Great book!!
My summers were never like these, for sure !!!
I truly enjoyed reading this one!
Very good book!
I love this book and it's the perfect book to read while on vacation or on the beach. Very easy read. Difficult to put down.
Very good read!!
Tug at the heartstrings tale of growing up, a good read. Will make you cry and laugh with recognition of how sometimes the ones we put on a pedestal are not the perfect beings we thought.
One of my all time favorites. Have read it over and over.
I got about 1/3 of the way through this book and chose to close it without finishing it. I've read many of Judy Blume's books and usually enjoy them. While I would never be called prudish, I found the amount of sexual conversation between two girls too young for those kinds of conversations inappropriate and disrespectful. I suspect the storyline may have been a good one further on, but the continual main theme of these types of conversations between these two girls was more than I wanted.
Judy Blume does not disapoint with this one.
great book!
Very sweet moving story.
interesting story, couldn't put it down. had me from the first page
I love Judy Blume's young reader books, so I was anxious to read her adult novels and started with Summer Sisters. What a waste of time! I'm not sure I want to pick up the others. I was disappointed three pages in. This is a depressing book about selfish people fixated on their own desires. If you want a happy ending, avoid this one. If you care about the characters you're reading about, don't be disappointed when you find no one to love in this book.
This book had a lot of sex in it, I must say. Perhaps that was the reality of the 70s and 80s ... not sure.
All in all, the book kept me reading, curious to find out what happens in the end. However, I can't say I liked any of the characters. It seems like ALL of them needed a healthy dose of logic and reason. They were so emotional and so all over the place, leaving much of their life to the whims of chance ... or, what I like to call, laziness and lack of personal responsibility for the decisions in one's life.
I couldn't relate to anyone. I can already imagine how the character's children will repeat the bad cycle of decision-making of their parents. I honestly hope most women have more sense than these characters!

A fun read for anyone who loves the relationships between women. For those of us who grew up with Judy Blume, she now takes us into the more sophisticated world of adult women. Worth a read.
It was a nice read, light and good for beach reading.
Its 1977, Victoria (Vix) Leonard and Caitlin Somers arent best friends in school and we definitely from different socio-economic backgrounds. Vixs parents were married and they struggled to make ends meet. Having a child with a disability one of her brothers had Muscular Dystrophy didnt help the family situation. Caitlins parents were divorced and her family had money. Her mother was still living a bit of the hippy/love child lifestyle and she spent each summer with her father and her brother on the east coast at a beach house.
Every summer, Caitlin invited one of her classmates to spend the summer with her at her fathers home. This year, she chooses Vix. With much persuasion, Vixs persons agree to let her go and Vixs world is changed forever. She learns about her sexuality and first love while spending the rest of her summers with Caitlin at the shore.
Throughout their friendship, Caitlin often betrays Vix and now its years later and Caitlin has asked Vix to be the Maid of Honor at her wedding. And, despite some of the past betrayals, Vix agrees to this but she now has to work her way through the betrayals and what happened in their last summer together at the beach.
I really liked this coming-of-age story. Vixs loyalty to Caitlin despite her betrayals is sometimes hard to understand and but at most times easy to understand.
The story is written with a flashback setup. It opens with Caitlin asking Vix to be her maid of honor and then goes back through how the two became friends and ends back at the request to be the maid of honor. I did make the mistake of not paying enough attention to the opening sequence and so when the story hit the person mentioned in the engagement, I didnt recognize the name and was a bit surprised at who the groom was. I felt this helped with my enjoyment of the book.
I also think that part of my enjoyment in this book is that fact that the characters came of age at the same time as I did. It really brought back my memories of junior high, high school, college and starting out on my own after college.

very well written, but the story made me sad.
I'd been meaning for awhile to read one of Judy Blume's adult books, so a little bit ago I picked this one up at Costco. I finally got to reading it this weekend, and I have no idea why I waited so long! It was a great book â I laughed, I cried, I felt like I grew up with these girls.

A story of two girls who meet on Martha's Vineyard and become as close as sisters one summer. It is a story of friendship, heartache and trust.
Very easy read.Excellent book to just escape and enjoy...
Wow...this Judy Blume book is not for kids! =) This is a great summer read, very funny, and had me laughing out loud!
I really liked this book! I wish that Judy Blume would write more adult books because her writing always has a sense of melancholy and true understanding of her characters.
A great book about two friends that spend the summer together in the Vineyard and grow up and have very interesting lives.
This is a good book that makes you feel good. Definitely worth your time to read.
Awesome book. I couldn't put it down.

Caitlin Somers and Victoria Leonard's world change in the summer of 1977 when they become friends in the big sprawling house at Martha'a Vineyard. Years later and after the friendship has stretched thinly, Caitlin begs Victoria to be her maid of honor. There will be a confrontation.
Very involved story about love and friendship. I enjoyed it!
"An exceptionally moving story that can leave the reader laughing and crying..." - The Denver Post
In Summer Sisters Blume again explores the ramifications of love--and lust--on two friends. Initially, the differences between Caitlin Somers and Victoria Leonard (or "Vix," as Caitlin christens her) draw them together: privileged Caitlin is wild and outspoken, beautiful but emotionally fragile, while working-class Vix is shy, reserved, and plain in comparison. After Caitlin selects Vix to accompany her to her father's home in Martha's Vineyard for the summer, the two become inextricably connected as "summer sisters."
The book begins in 1977, when the main character, "Vix" is invited by Caitlin Somers to spend the summer at Martha's Vineyard. The book follows their friendship through the years. I enjoyed the book and would highly recommend it.
I know I LOVED her when i was an adolescent, but this one was pretty forgettable.
I loved Judy Blume as a kid and now I love her as an adult. Great story of friendship.
This is a good book about 2 girls and there summer fun! Loved this book!
New York Times Bestseller. Story of two girls from different backgrounds who become friends in the 1970's. Very good read.
The beginning of the book was a little uncomfortable to read, but from the middle on, I really got into it and enjoyed the ending.
Great Book One the best i have ever red by JUdy Blume

This was a really great book. It was referred to me by a good friend who promised that I wouldn't be able to put it down and she was right on!
This was an easy read. Once I started, I couldn't put it down.
FROM THE PUBLISHER
Summer Sisters chronicles the lifelong friendship between two women, from their girlhood summers together on Martha's Vineyard to their more complicated adult relationship. Caitlin dazzled Vix from the start, sweeping her into the world of the Somers family, a world of privilege, adventure and sexual daring. Vix's bond with her 'summer' family had forever reshaped her relatioship to her own, opening doors to opportunities she had never imagined. Then, the summer she falls passionately in love, in one shattering moment on a moonswept beach, everything changes, exposing a dark undercurrent in her extraordinary friendship with Caitlin that will haunt them through the years. A riveting exploration of the choices that define our lives, of friendship and love, of the families we are born into and those we struggle to create, and a story for every woman who has ever had a friend too dangerous to forgive and too essential to forget.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. A great beach read.
A very moving story about how how a young girl's wealthy friend invites her into her family and how it changes her life...well-written, moving novel.
A great light read. One of Judy Blume's more adult books, it takes a relationship that started during a budding-teenage summer into the present time, full of all the twists and turns of life.
Where have all the happy books gone? Why is very book about screwed-up, dysfunctional people and their families?
Loved it!
I loved this Judy Blume!
I enjoyed this book; it was a quick (adult) read.
very good book
This is a warm, lovely great beach read.
NEW YORK BESTSELLER LIST WOUNDERFUL BOOK
In the summer of 1977, Victoria Leonard's world changed forever when Caitlin Somers chose her as a friend. Dazzling, reckless Caitlin welcomed Vix into the heart of her sprawling, eccentric family, opening doors to a world of unimaginabe privilege, sweeping her away to vacations on Martha's Vineyard, a magical, wind-blown island where two friends became summer sisters. An engaging story of the unlikely coming together of two young girls. They begin spending Summers together. Their friendship continues and we watch them grow up. The family dynamic is very interesting. It draws you in and makes you want to continue.

Absolutely love anything Judy Blume writes. You'll enjoy this.
A wonderful book!
I recieved this book as a gift from the author when she was staying at a hotel I worked at she signed it for me and left it at the front desk for me as a thank you for helping her during her stay. I tried numerous times to read it but it seemed too slow to get into after holding on to it for years when I got married it was one of the books I let go of to downsize and fit in our new apt, now after reading all the reviews I regret it and wish I had stuck it out and read it.
Great beach read!
Shes one of the best
Judy Blume is best known as an author of children's books, but she writes wonderfully in this book for adults.

Judy Blume writes great children books and adult books. This one is fantastic! I wish she had more great adult books.

I really loved this book!I would recommend this book as a must read!
Judy Blume is excellent once again
Story of two girls and their friendship over the years. The story was bittersweet and sad, involving and complex, brilliant in its everyday commonness.
A very nice book. I just kept turning pages. I really enjoyed it!
I did not like the book. I expected better writing and less smut from the author of the children's books I loved.
I enjoyed this book.
I think maybe she just tried to cover too much. I was very involved in the story as Vix travels through adolescence and young-adulthood - trying to find her way and figure out who she is. But in the end, her marriage, job, family just gets kind of thrown together. The book was just okay for me.
Really good quick read
Fun and quick read. Would highly recommend.

A good summer beach read.
Wonderful story by Judy Blume. Enjoy :)
Judy Blume first won legions of fans with such young adult classics as Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and Forever, in which she tackles the cultural hot button of teenage sexuality. In Summer Sisters, her third novel for adults, the author again explores the ramifications of love--and lust--on two friends.
On the Vineyard, Vix and Caitlin first find love, then sex--and lots of it. Yet Blume soon moves beyond hot fun in the summer sun, tracing the romantic and familial travails of the two from pre-adolescence to adulthood. Solid Vix evolves into Victoria, an equally solid, Harvard-educated, Manhattan public-relations exec. Unpredictable Caitlin opts out of college and travels to Europe, where she has a string of short-lived affairs with a series of intriguing (in every sense of the word) foreigners. It is only after she returns to the Vineyard that Caitlin does the unthinkable, forever changing both her friendship with Vix and their lives. Blume once again proves herself a master of the female psyche, and Summer Sisters is likely to entertain both her postadolescent and more mature readers.
