Summer Child is my first book by Luanne Rice. Really good, reminds me a little of Nora Roberts, who I love. A little mystery, a little romance. I was able to guess at some of the mystery part but wasen't really sure till the end. The ending was a little "cut off" for me, I felt it should've ended with more detail.

This is a great story with mystery, love, and the power of friendship. I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read the second book in this series.

Summer's Child was a good book to pass away the summer nights or a take to the beach book. Interesting characters and good mysterious plot.
If you are female and enjoy working with your hands, this book will also appeal to your creative side.
Also a good connection with the need for friendships. I do recommend reading!

Luanne Rice is an unbelievable writer! She draws you in to her characters' lives until you almost care about them as real people. Summer's Child is a prime example of this. Every mother can feel Lily's feelings about her little girl, Rose. It gives some insight into how women in abusive relationships feel.....how eventually they come out of the shell they buried themselves in. This story is beautiful! I loved it and can't wait to read the conclusion- Summer of Roses.

This story is one of those hard-to-put-down books. I believe it was the best one Rice has written yet, and I am looking forward to reading the sequel Summer of Roses.

Jessica Taylor, and Rose Malone were the very best of friends. They had a lot in common as did both of their mothers, Marisa Taylor, and Lily Malone. Both families were hiding from dangerous husbands, escaping to Nova Scotia where they hoped to never be found.

Jessica was a healthy 9-year old girl, while Rose always had many heart defects, and went to the hospital often for surgeries. In the book, she was to have one final heart operation to finally repair all the damage to her heart and would last her many years.

On the other side of the coin though is still mourning the loss of her grandchild Mara. She went to water the garden one day, and then was never seen again afterwords. And at the time she was expecting a child. Patrick Murphy, a retired police detective was obsessed with finding out the real truth of the matter, and could not let it rest until he knew the answers.

Lily Malone also meets a scientist in the story, Liam Neill, who is more supportive toward her and her daughter's needs then any man has ever been. Especially Ted, her abusive first husband. He sticks by Lily through the whole time Rose has her surgeries, and the two may have hopes of starting a new life yet. Before this happens though, other events take place. Ted, the abusive husband is on to them, and will have to be stopped before causing some serious trouble in both Lily's and Marisa's lives.

Two different women flee abusive martial situations to protect their children. One woman is tracked by a retired police detective, intent on finding out at long last what exactly became of her.

I found inconsistencies in the writing made for an unbelievable storyline at times. It's a decent enough story for a beach or vacation read.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Resonant and beautifully written, this novel offers a lyrical meditation on healing, a setting as soft and colorful as beach glass and a story that's both suspenseful and tender. Lily Malone and her daughter, Rose, have built a happy life in Cape Hawk, Nova Scotia, despite the ever-present fear that the abusive husband Lily has fled will find them. Old memories surface as Rose becomes friends with a girl whose wary mom is hiding a similar past. When Rose's congenital heart defect forces her to undergo open-heart surgery, Lily also faces her conflicting feelings for marine biologist Liam Neill, whose unflinching support she has been too emotionally scarred to accept. Ultimately, Liam's love and Rose's recovery give her the strength to confront her longing for the pastand the loved oneshe has left behind. Rice (Dance with Me) excels at weaving the familiar staples of popular fiction into storytelling gold; her talent for portraying both children at risk and good men scarred by circumstance also dazzles. Above all, this bookone of Rice's best in recent yearsdepicts the magical endurance of love with the sensitivity and realism for which she's known.

My aggravation with this book is that it traveled too slowly most of the time. It was as if the author was trying to wring every ounce of emotion out of most scenes. I really got irritated with the pace. The author traveled so slowly and dropped so many clues about what would happen next that I began to wish she'd just get on with it. But the real reason for the 3-star rating was the ending; what a contrived bit of poppycock.

On the other hand, the descriptions of Novia Scotia were lovely and the info about the whales was very interesting.
