The sun was bouncing around the field as if it were covered in mirrors. It was early in the afternoon. David was leaning against the tree in his favorite spot, just out of eyesight of his parents house. He hated when his parents would fight, and they were at it again. They would say such awful things about each other and he knew that by the end of the night one of them would leave. Probably his father. The old farmhouse was as ugly on the outside as some of the conversations were on the inside, with peach colored siding, rotting gray shutters, and an old rickety porch that you had to play hopscotch across to keep from falling through. David got up and walked to the pond nearby. It was a big, muddy mess that he never dared step foot in. Cows shit in there, he'd thought to himself on many occasions. He skipped a few stones across the surface and picked up another batch. Suddenly he heard a loud crash from the kitchen. He ran back to his favorite spot and listened while trying not to guess what had happened. They didnt always get physical, but when they did he knew it was only seconds before one of them would leave. Then it would be peaceful again. His dad, who always carried a bunch of keys with him for their various buildings and farm equipment that jingled around announcing his location wherever he went, came out of the house. He slammed the door behind him, and jumped into their only vehicle and sped down the dirt driveway, kicking up huge clouds of dust and many rocks in his path. David just sat under the tree for a minute or two, hopefully allowing his mother time to calm down before he went back to the house. He went in the back door, which was just next to his bedroom. His mother was sitting on the sofa to his left, crying. He went into his room, which was to his right, and got out the only thing that would make his mother feel better. It was a green teddy bear that hed had since he came home from the hospital. It always worked on his mom. He went back into the living room and sat next to his mom, placing the bear into her lap. She took her head out of her hands and embraced it while placing an arm around him. He looked around. There was broken glassware all over the kitchen floor, and the kitchen table was on its side. ___________________________________ A few hours later, he was back under his tree. The sun was just over the horizon, its brilliant pink and yellow body not yet quite touching the earth. The clouds were coming in from behind him. He could feel the air become electric with the anticipation of rain. As the first few drops fell, he just sat in his spot. It was a warm day and they were cool on his skin as they washed away the residue from his tears. The sun in the distance kissed his face as they rolled down his cheeks. A rumbling in the distance told him his father was coming home. He was driving much slower now. Everything would be ok. The rain would wash it all away. |
