A remarkably well written novel about an unidentified stranger who comes to a small upstate New York town and causes them to rethink their lives & values.

John Gardner wrote this book and it's considered a modern masterpiece. Gardner, who died fairly young in a motorcycle crash, was most certainly in love with the English language.
