I love Mark Helprin as an author--no one can write the kind of beautiful prose he does, but this one 'missed for me' for a strange reason. It is an ultimate love story, but he put so much into it that out of 705 pages, most are sheer lengthy, lengthy prose on how to say 'I love you'...and written so beautifully that you overdose on the prose and have to pause between sentences to grasp it. That makes 705 pages of love verbiage tedious to the max.
