DFW is inconsistent. Some of his work is so intellectually dense as to be indecipherable. But many of his essays (such as the title essay of this work) are incredibly funny and astute. In fact, eponymous essay (about going on a cruise ship) is one of my favorites of all time - it's both clever and introspective at the same time.
Wallace has a very particular writing style, which I guess you either "get" or don't. But if you like intelligent, rambling, and witty observations, then you should take a look at this book. (If you're new to DFW, then I'd recommend Consider the Lobster first, but this is also a good starting point).
