Book #23 in the "In Death" Series. I liked this one, I'd say its better than average, and the average in this series is pretty damn good.
Eve is called to the scene when an entire family is slaughtered cleanly and professionally in their beds - never even waking to see their killers...top notch security system, nice neighborhood, squeeky clean life hints at no motive or enemies...and now the killers know that they missed one - one accidental survivor, a nine-year old girl, who called the police and crawled through her parents blood to hide.
Eve Dallas finds the girl and while promising her she'll find the killers and the reasons why...she and Rourke struggle to put some distance between this traumatized girl and their memories of their own traumatized pasts. They take the young witness into their own home to keep her as safe as they can.
The killers are organized, well-funded, seemingly military trained and equipped with patience and cunning...and now they know that the cops have the surviving witness...and that the job isn't finished.
What has this group of cold killers got against one little girl and her family?

This one was much better than the others - more of a plot and less of a romance novel.

Excellent book! Another great "In Death" book!

This was the first book I read by this author. I enjoyed the suspense of the book. Looking forward to reading the rest of the books.
Eve and Roark what else needs to be said. This one add's a child in need of rescue and Dallas must find who and why her parents and brother and her little sleepover friend was killed. Great story See how much Eve has grown from the first few books. Excellant addition to the In Death Series.
In her newest novel in the series, Nora Roberts, aka J.D. Robb, returns to the New York City of 2059 - where Leiutenant Eve Dallas struggles to solve the murder of a seemingly ordinary family, and protect one small, terrified survivor. Kid's are not Dallas' strong point but she steps up to the plate and provides the child a safe place to stay - with her. She makes a promise to the child that she will find the killer and bring him to justice. Her involvement in the case unearths some of her own darketst memeories and deepest fears. I liked the pace of the book and found myself ignoring all my evening chores to sit down and read !
I always enjoy the Eve Dallas mysteries and this was no exception. This one tells of the trauma of a young girl witnessing her parents murders and the affection that Eve's hard core husband, Roarke, and sometimes snide butler, Summerset, develop for the child.
J.D. Robb/Nora Roberts is an excellent writer. I love her books as must read!
another excellent story in the "In Death" series
The Swisher family was murdered in their beds with military percision. There is no DNA, no criminal background, no affaifs, no clues. The only suriver is the small daughter who saw all. Can Eve Dallas save her? Why was the family killed? This is a twisted tale that will keep you guessing.
You know police lieutenant, hard-as-steel, Eve Dallas on another terrific murder mystery.
Nora Roberts writing mystery as J.D. Robb
Eve Dallas mysteries. I like the fact that they take place in the future and have imaginative technical advances as part of everyday life. The characters are enjoyable.
Eve and Roarke rock!
Reading them all! :)
Reading them all! :)
Another J.D. Robb in the "Death" series. Involves a child, which gets to Eve very deeply.
showed Eve's compassionate side
I enjoy Nora Roberts/JD Robb and I found this particular book to be better than most in the "In Death" series. Very entertaining and even moving.
One of my favorite authors...a great read.
Can be read individually, though it is a triology, and an excellent read. Enjoy all her books.
I don't really review books, but I have read all the In Death series up to this book and I love them all but I have to say that to date this has been the best one.
Engaging story set in the future.
A really good romance/suspense book.

a tear jerker
Excellent, I love this series!!
Excellent mystery writer
I love this complete series from Nora Roberts,
A novel in the futuristic series starring Lt. Eve Dallas. She returns to New York City in 2059---where she struggles to solve the murder of a seemingly ordinary family, and protect one small, terrified survivor.
One of her best.
Love these books. Not sure they make any bad ones in this series I sure haven't found one. Loved this one as much as the rest.

Wonderful series! I can't get enough of the "In Death" series. Suspense, romance & mystery all wrapped into one.
Very good story. Ties a lot of the past issues together from Eve's childhood.
Eve discovers a little girl survived her family assination. Eve gets caught up in taking care of the little girl and finding the murders.
Great book, interesting action. Futuristic - I wouldn't think I would enjoy this book but I really liked it. I want to read the series now.
I enjoyed this one. A bit different from the usual Eve Dallas. Maybe children are in the future! A hope anyway.
Lieutenant Eve Dallas struggles to solve the murder of a seemingly ordinary family, and protect one small, terrified survivor.
As always, J.D. Robb delivers in this Survivor in Death book!
A great mystery-romance read in the "In Death" series
This has been my absolute favorite of the Eve and Roarke series. I loved the addition of Nixie. I highly recommend.
I thought Survivor in Death was just OK. There were moments when I laughed out loud and got misty-eyed, but I felt somewhat dissatisfied with the story as a whole. Eve seemed very cold to me. I understand due to her childhood, she'd have a hard time dealing with a kid victim. At times though, she seemed a bit heartless and that not the Eve I've come to learn. The normal camaraderie between everyone didn't feel as genuine this time. I didn't really care for the mystery either. I didn't like the idea behind the killings nor the fact that the killers were tied to groups from previous books. The ending seemed a bit contrived and convenient. I hope the next one is better.
What can I say, it is a J.D. Robb book and I am hooked on Eve Dallas and even more on her lusheous husband, Roark. The truth behind the murders will shock you.
Usual for Robb, good book if you like her. (Nora Roberts)
Good story; a little difficult to visualize the activities, since it takes place in the future with technology that doesn't exist. But, the story is a good read.
My daughter introduced my to Nora Roberts' books and I can't get enough of them! I really enjoy the In Death Series, but her other books are great too.
J.D.Robb, again at her best
If you are a fan of J. D. Robb or Nora Roberts, this book lives up to her rep. Eve Dallas is as great as ever. This book shows Dallas has a heart.
Another great story of Lt Eve Dallas.
As always, love Nora Roberts writing as J.D. Robb!
A fabulous book. Anyone who loves the Death series knows what I mean when I say I cannot way for J.D. Robb to write the next Eve and Roarke story! A must read.
A little girl who is the sole survivor and witness to the murder of her family complicates the murder investigation for Det. Eve Dallas. Nightmares of her own childhood are brought to the fore. J.D. Robb is Nora Roberts' nom de plume for her mysteries set in the near future. One of my favorite mystery series.
One of her best books. Lots of action.
Eve and Roarke in another stunning futuristic novel. Must read!!
If you like the Eve Dallas series, this one will not disappoint! I think I read this in two nights :)
Another exciting mystery solved by Lt. Eve Dallas in 2059.
Fast and flawless in the true form of JD Robb.
Love this series. These stories just keep getting better even when you think she would run out of story ideas. This is one of the best of the series in my estimation.
Return to 2059 New York City. Lt. Eve Dallas struggles to solve the murder of a seemingly ordinary family and protect one small terrified survivor.
One of the best in the series. Makes you start to wonder when Roarke and Dallas are going to have kids.
Lieutant Eve Dallas struggles to solve the murder of a seemingly ordinary family and protect one small terrified survivor
wonderful installment in this series-kept me on my toes
Great characters, I recommend this series. It's Nora Roberts writing as J.D. Robb. Futuristic detective novels with great romance angle.

Very good book. Held my attention all the way.
Without a doubt, a MUST read.
Good book. Lots of twists; lots of action. But Eve always solves her case, especially with Roarke's help.
Excellent!
The bookstore sold this one autographed!
I love powerful Lt. Eve Dallas and how the complex New York City crimes are solved. If you don't wanna bite her husband, don't read these books! Nora Robert's best writing is as JD Robb in this "In Death" series of some 30+ stories to date. I collect all of the JD Robb books, but skip the Roberts, whose stories are not as tight as those about Lt. Eve Dallas - ass kicker! If the future of New York City is like this, I fear these futuristic killers who are sneaky and complex.

This is another great book in this series.
Lt. Eve Dallas is called to the Swisher Residence. The family members have been murdered in their beds. The youngest child, Nixie Swisher, is an eyewitness. Eve and her detectives are looking for clues. Why was this family targeted? How was the security breached? And why will the killers do anything to get their hands on nine year old Nixie? When Eve takes her only witness home with her, Child Protective Services are not happy. But Eve knows the killers will find it nearly impossible to breach the security that Roarke has on their home.
This is another excellent addition to the Eve Dallas series. The murders are shocking and the clues are few. As usual, the story takes a backseat to the characters. The interaction between Eve, Roarke and Nixie was first-rate. Eve and Roarke have no idea how to handle a nine year old girl, especially one that is grieving for her family. The whole cast of supporting characters make an appearance in this book and help solve the mystery of who killed the Swisher family. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

Eve Dallas & Roarke keep getting better. THis is perfect blending of the science fiction and mystery genres.
JD Robb at her best.
An upper-middle class family is murdered in their beds with brutal, military precision. A state-of-the-art security system was breached and the killers used night vision equipment to move through the house. They might have pulled off the perfect crime except they overlooked a nine-year-old girl who hid in the dark kitchen. Not one to be comfortable with children Dallas takes the child into protective custody hoping that she can help her solve this crime.
Fast paced book centering around a bike messenger that becomes involved in a murder investigation.
In the 20th fine volume of Roberts's futuristic mystery franchise, police lieutenant Eve Dallas is called in when lawyer Grant Swisher and his family are massacred with eerie skillfulness on the Upper West Side. The only survivor is 10-year-old Nixie, who evadesand witnessesthe killers as she creeps down to the kitchen for a midnight snack. Despite the painful memories of her own childhood that Nixie's presence calls up, Eve decides to hide the girl in the high-tech mansion she shares with her husband, billionaire businessman Roarke. With help from Roarke; her faithful sidekick, Peabody; and others, Eve discovers the existence of a shadowy former military operative with a grudge against Swisherthe lawyer helped the operative's battered wife divorce him right before she disappeared. The relatively early disclosure of the villain's identity and the dearth of other viable suspects dulls the suspense in the first half of the book, but tension escalates toward an absorbing denouement as a trap Eve sets for her target ends up with Nixie as its unintentional bait. Throughout, the series' colorful supporting cast and Eve's prickly personalitysmartly showcased in her power struggles with everything from space-age vending machines to her own pastremain as vividly appealing as ever.
J.D. Robb is the best!
No affairs. No criminal connections. No DNA. No Clues. Only a nine year old girl - the only survivor. Can they keep her alive long enought to capture the guilty?
No affairs. No criminal connections. No DNA. No clues. Eve Dallas may be the best cop in the city-not to mention having the lavish resources of her husband, Roarke, at her disposal-but the Swisher case has her baffled. The family members were murdered in their beds with brutal, military precision. The state-of-the-art security was breached, and the killers used nitht vision to find their way through the cozy middle-class house. Clearly, Dallas is dealing with pros. The only mistake they made was to overlook the nine-year-old girl cowering in the dark in the kitchen...
Now Nixie Swisher is an orphan-and the sole eyewitness to a seemingly inexplicable crime. Kids are not Dallas' strong suit. But Nixie needs a safe place to stay, And Dallas needs to solve the case. Not only because of the promise she made to Nixie. Not only for the cause of justice. But also to put to rest some of her own darkest memories-and deepest fears. With her partner Peabody on the job, and watching her back-and with Raorke providing the kind of help only he can give-Lieutenant Eve Dallas is running after shadows, and dead-set on finding out who's behind them.
