If you love the series of books about the shops on Blossom Street, then you will also love this one. The lead character is a wife, mom of almost grown kids, and daughter to a mom who is showing her age. She starts thinking of the what ifs in her life when she has to go home to move mom to an assisted living home. There is a bit of mystery and some romance, but mostly it is about finding yourself again once the kids are not taking all your time, and finding that guy you used to love that you are still married to. I loved it.

Thsi book was a very easy read that had you guessing throughout, but not really in a mystery-book sort of way. Macomber's writing is very easy to follow, not too embellished, and perfect for when you want a light read. This book is no exception. It is intended to be before Back to Blossom which I am reading next, and ties into Blossom Street/Good Yarn.

As with The Shop on Blossom Street, the characters come to life in this story as well. I could relate to each of the women in this book, even though they had a few years on me. There is a mystery, some romance, and a snotty kid who knows everything. This book certainly kept my interest, as I read it in a day.

This book was a mixture of a mild suspense with some romance. I enjoyed it very much. No explicit sexual parts, just a good, clean easy reading story. I had a hard time putting this book down. I would recommend it for sure!

I could not put this book down! This author has become one of my absolute favorites; discovered her through her book "Shop On Blossom Street", which is another fabulous work. She often writes books in a series.
This book, Susannah's Garden, has such rich character development in all of its characters. Not just the "main" character, either. You feel like you're a part of each of their lives. And there are some unexpected surprises that will keep you wanting to see what the next chapter brings. Thoroughly enjoyable; can't wait for the sequel!

Though this is book number three in the knitting book series, you don't really know that it is part of this series until the very end. No repeat characters, not the same location, just a quick mention in the very last chapter of buying a flower shop Blossom Street. This book can be read as a stand alone and you wouldn't miss a thing in the series.
Susannah Nelson has a solid life, but something seems missing. There is no real spark or drive. She is a fifth grade teacher, she has a husband and two teenage children, but something is gone.
When she gets a call and realizes that her mother is no longer able to live on her own since her husbands passing, Susannah decides to go home, to Colville, Washington to try and convince her mother that its time to move into an assistant living facility.
Going home brings about its own trauma for Susannah, reoccurring dreams of a high school sweetheart, the death of her brother thirty years before and unresolved problems with her deceased father.
Since she is now home, she decides to find Jake, the high school sweetheart, and find out why he suddenly disappeared from her life. Susannah finds so much more then she ever bargained for. A love is lost, but a greater love, the love of family, is found.

Beautiful story about what you think is true from your youth may not be the FULL truth. And how your viewpoint and thoughts change as you grow and have children. Loved the characters! Perfect book to curl up with either out in the sunshine or by a fire. Looking forward to reading more of this series. Have loved all the other Debbie Macomber books that I have read.

As usual, Debbie Macomber had me glued to this book until I finished it. Reading one of her "series" books is like watching a mini series or a soap opera. Such a good book. Hard to put the book down. Good surprises in the book. The book is about at a gal of fifty regretting paths not taken. She goes home to visit her Mother who is having difficulty living alone. In returning home, she also returns to the past.

Wondeful story of the generations. Susannah's mother is becoming less able to care for herself in her family home. Susannah's daughter is finishing her year of college, her boyfriend seems distant, and her future seems bleak. And Susannah's summer off from the classroom doesn't seem adequate to handle everyone's problems - including her own. Why is her ex-boyfriend showing up in her dreams so often? An engaging story by Macomber, as usual. These characters all come to life and their problems matter to you before the story develops much at all. Recommended.

I guess I'm in the minority of the people. I liked it, but didn't love it. I felt it started very slowly. On page 170 I was still deciding whether to keep reading it or not. It was around the middle of the book that I finally started getting into it. It did have a really good and surprising ending.

Her characters seem to mirror her own feelings - and she has a good heart. The story shows a small family in crisis and totally unaware there is an internal problem. Is it dealt with well? Read and find out. Like most of her other books, this one really leaves you feeling that you want to come back for another visit.

While most of Debbie Macomber's books are nice little stories that keep me interested -- this one was just down-right depressing. I didn't like any of the characters. They just seemed so whiney and gutless.
There wasn't much to keep me interested, but I still kept plugging away hoping that it would get better. It never really did. I wanted to shake Susannah's daughter "Chrissy" more than once. Sheesh, how could one character be so whiney and spoiled? Moreover, why would I want to read pages and pages about that character flaw? I wanted to tell Susannah to just let Chrissy make her choices and suffer some consequences. Talk about a self-induldged child!
I generally recommend Debbie Macomber's books, but this one I would definetly WALK ON BY. Don't waste your time on this. It doesn't really add any nuance to the other stories set on Blossom Street. You will be saving a hours of your life that could be better spent in say ... even WEEDING YOUR OWN GARDEN ... rather than reading this book. (And I really don't like weeding in my garden!)

There really wasn't all that much to this book. I felt like Macomber merely skimmed the surface of what could have been a deep and moving story. Instead of exploring the loss of a loved one through psychology, she explains all the misunderstandings of childhood through an implausible series of events and personal connections. There is NO way any of this could happen in real life. If this was a fantasy novel, I could forgive her.
It's not too interesting until the last third of the book, then it's enough to really keep you going. So, it's not a total loss. The main character is fairly well-developed and it shows. Recommended for someone who wants a very, very light read.

At fifty Susannah finds herself regretting the paths not taken. Long married, a mother and a teacher, she should be happy. But she feels there's something missing in her life. Not only that, she's balancing the demands of an aging mother and a tempermental twenty year old daughter.
Her mother, Vifian, a recent widow, is having difficulty coping and living alone, so Susannah goes home to Colville, Washington. In returning to her parents house, her girlhood friends and the garden she's always loved, she also returnes to the past----and the choides she made back then. What she discovers is that things are not alsways as they once seemeed. Some paths are dead ends, but some gardens remain beautiful.

With girlhood memories resurfacing along with long lost friends, Susannah discovered secrets that revealed not only an unselfish act of love, caring, and protection, but a surprising revelation of a mysterious presence once thought to be a figment of her mothers failing mind.
Great easy read with a bit of mystery thrown in. I did have to suspend believe a little bit to believe the end but I still really enjoyed the story.
I sympathized with Susannah's curiosity about a past boyfriend (Jake), especially because things were left unresolved. She did make several really dumb decisions and I thought she was way too lenient as a parent. She should hold her daughter (Chrissie) accountable for her promise to help her. I loved that Susannah employed different tactics to deal with Chrissie's bad boy friend (Troy).
Chrissie was really annoying but she was supposed to be. Susannah was right on that Chrissie acted more like a teenager than someone in their 20's. Kind of disappointed that Macomber wrote about Troy being taken care of but we never see it.
Loved Caroyln. She was such a cool side character, definitely the perfect sidekick for Susan.

Good read. As usual she doesn't disappoint.
This is my favorite of all Ms. Macomber's books and not just because my name is Susannah.
Now fifty Susannah Nelson, wife to her husband Joe who adores her and mother to two wonderful teens (Chrissie and Brian), enjoys teaching fifth graders in Seattle. Not everything is perfect in her life as her dad George recently died and her mom Vivian seems increasingly incapable of taking care of herself. However, what eats at her soul most is recent dreams of her first love from high school Jake Presley.
When Susannah turned eighteen, her parents sent her overseas to school. She said her goodbyes to Jake, her brother Doug and her parents not realizing that she would never see her boyfriend or sibling again. Not long after she left, Doug died in a car crash and Jake vanished. Feeling an obsession to know what happened to Jake, Susannah returns to Colville, Washington allegedly to settle her mother in a nursing home. As friction at home suddenly rises from her college aged daughter turned rebel, Susannah with help from a private investigator begins to learn the truth of what happened over three decades ago that tie Jake's disappearance with Doug's death.

The start of a series; the second book is just out in hardback. This is about Susannanh who at 50 begins to wonder about the "road not taken" and her first love. This is the first book I have read by this author and she is a bit too "sweet" for my taste.
Another good read, I just love how the people in the story remind me of anyone in my home town. I really feel at home when I read her stories. This is my favorite book so far out of the Blossom street series. It takes you away from Blossom street for a while to learn about some different people. You read about the challenges of taking care of an elderly parent who is losing their ability to take care of themselves but is reluctant to go to a home. This is hard to deal with especially when you have a daughter who shows up and starts running around with a wild boy in town. In going through her mother's things she learns a few secrets as well.

18...that magical year when everything changes...saying goodbyes...moving away...making your own way in the world...at 50...regretting paths not taken...trying to balance the demands of those dependent on you...moving back home...discovering that things are not always as they seem...questioning choices she made in the past...and revealing shocking truths about her family...and herself...I am so a part of her story...cheering Susannah on, to new paths...

I have just started reading Macomber books. Love them all so far. This is a wonderful story that applies to everyone. Recommend highly.

Another great great great book from Debbie Macomber.
another great story by Macomber
"Susannah Nelson, now at fifty, finds herself regretting the paths not taken when she was 18. Long married, a mother and a teacher, she should be happy. But she feels there's something missing in her life. Not only that, she's balancing the demands of an aging mother and a temperamental 22 year old daughter." "{Susannah's} inquiry into the road not taken reveals shocking truths about he family and, most importantly, herself in Macomber's lastes touching and resonant tale." BOOKLIST I thought it was a very good story, especially since it will lead the reader to a new book called Back On Blossom Street (Macomber has written 2 other books about the knitting store on Blossom Street). I can't wait to read that newest one.
