Mix in the protagonist:Garrett , a hardboiled private dick in the tradition of Phillip Marlowe with a lot of the wiseguy humor of Spencer P.I.
Now add a large dollup of unique setting: A fantasy world like Lord of The Rings.
Sprinkle generously with some of the wierdest characters ever to appear in detective fiction: Garretts friend: A half elf who owns a bar and spends much of his time as an assassin, an assortment of Elves, Dwarves, Giants, Trolls, Mages and Warlocks and many more.
Season it with his affinity for beautiful redheads.
That's a recipe for some Great Reads. Sweet Silver Blues is his first story. I have read Every One and have never been dissapointed. Truly Fun Stuff !

First in the Garrett Files series, which is a genre-bending series featuring a hard-boiled PI in a fantasy world with gnomes, elves, dwarves and other strange cross-breeds. Garrett is a human. He is awakened early one morning by a family of short people whose brother/son was an old army buddy of Garrett's. They ask him to look into his death--well, not so much his death, which seems to have been an accident, but to find out why he left everything--which is a questionably obtained horde of silver they found hidden in the basement--to a woman they don't know. The law stipulates that she be contacted to see if she is able to or wants to claim the estate. This woman just happens to be an old love of Garrett's, so naturally he's intrigued and sets out to look into it. The woman lives in a war-torn region and is apparently married to someone else and finding her proves most difficult and dangerous. Interesting premise, interesting characters, and mostly enjoyable though I found it a little heavy on the violence and beer swilling and a little light on character development and details.

In style of Hammet and Chandler, Glen Cook has copied the hardboiled detective story and placed it right square in the land of Fantasy Fiction. Nice pacing and fun to read. I highly recommend it.
Not bad but there are other fantasy detective/McGyvers series out there that are better. Pacing a bit a slow mid book but cranks up towards the end. Interesting "world" so I would read other books set there.
I liked this book, but I would have liked it more had the author given more explanation of the various creatures and other inhabitants of the world, and also a little more detail of the war the book keeps referring to. Still, it was an enjoyable read.
If you enjoy a hard boiled PI story with humor and can wrap your head around the fantasy you'll enjoy this. The elves, trolls, etc., are just as or more "human" and interesting as any other character. The story moves fast with quick dialogue and lots of action. Enjoy!
