I enjoyed your stories. Susan
Oh good Lord is she pretty! That shiny long highlighted hair and those gold eyes. That beautiful smile that I suffered through each time her mother turned the key to widen her palette for room for those second teeth. And she’s tall. She’ll be able to wear anything! Tall girls can carry all kinds of clothes. She has her mother’s cheek bones. She walks just like her mother. The same gait. Her beautiful long, long legs. The same swing of her mother’s beautiful long legs. When I watch them walk together, I watch my daughter again. She is so like her mother and yet so like her father. He has an inner peace. Her bedroom is a disaster. So like her mother. Her walls are covered with the meanings of life and love. Looking to understanding the challenges of adulthood, she sometimes wishes she was six. The decisions were made for her then. And there was a Santa Claus. Her shredded childhood blanket nestles in her unmade sweet sixteen bed. Her opinions are her morals and values. She doesn’t run with peer group pressures. She doesn’t fear the possible rejection. She commands respect for rejecting harmful indulgences. She protects her body, her health, her future. She is my first grandchild. Yesterday, I held her in my arms and felt the overwhelming joy of becoming Grammy. Her tiny sweet face. Her first smile for me. Some of her first words for me (stuck….pop will fix it). As she turns sixteen, I hope I will live to see her children. They will be as wonderful as she is. I just know it. |
