I think this author has gotten a little too greedy with the success of this cozy series. Although it's been one of my favorites since the beginning, and this book is definitely better than #11, it completely lacks the romance that added to the mystery in the earlier books. Jake is only heard from by phone a couple times until the last page of the book. Momma and the Chief are doing nothing. Grace has one dance with an old flame.
I mention this because these books are now self published and at the end of Book 11, the author announced that the readers wanted them shorter. Five books have been published in this series so far in 2014. While they might include a good mystery, I feel the author (AKA Tim Myers) has taken the flesh right out of this series by just churning them out rather than staying true to the series. I can no longer recommend them unless you're looking for a straight whodunit that's a quick read.
