THis is the first book in the Rigant series and introduces you to the Rigante people and the first warrior/hero - Connavar. If you like a good quest, you will like this book and the three that follow it!
This is one of the best fantasies I've read in a long time. From start to finish there was never a slow spot. It kept me up late finishing it.

The characters are not too unbelievable, but not very engaging. Gemmell writes better stories than this. It's the beginning of a series that seems to sell well, so maybe the later books are more developed.

my favorite of the Rigante series by far! it's excellent, My friend recommended this book to me when I was out of fresh material, and I was hooked from the first word. This was my first trip into the fantasy genre.
An enjoyable and interesting story from a premier author.
This is an in depth high fantasy that kept me riveted from the 1st page. David Gemmell has a way of getting the reader vested in his characters. The magic in the book is light and deftly handled. There are elements of Celtic fantasy with some druids and magical/elemental creatures called the seidh who tend to interact with mortals as they will but are generally not to be relied upon. As well, there is a "witch" who gives up her powers to help her mortal friends only to regain them later through the selfless act of another. At heart this is a story about a sword wielding hero who rises from an obscure birth to become a hero. It is the beginning of a series which shows much promise. I just finished this book and have book 2 in my hand just begging me to open the cover. I have to see what happens to the characters I am getting to know so well.
Interesting, but not going to be a favorite of mine. I have the other 3 to read. Perhaps I will change my mind when I finish the series.
