Kerry Tombs' stories are wonderfully drawn in a time before CSI and cell phones when ingenuity and hard work solved crimes. Samuel Ravenscroft, a detective in the Whitechapel branch of the Metropolitan Police, has been seconded to the Worcester Cathedral to find a missing librarian (Nicholas Evelyn) and a priceless medieval manuscript.
