This is a great suspenseful book. So good and a surprising ending. I love Dean Koontz. I had never read his books before, but now I am as big a fan of his as I am of Stephen King. A master storyteller.

The beginning hooked me (which is why I bought it). The middle started to confuse me - where is this story going? The ending annoyed me - the author headed in a completely different direction that I am still convinced doesn't fit. The first half is compelling, at any rate.

This is a book about the destruction of the world. It contains graphic imagry and imaginative concepts. It takes your prespective and challenges it. Who is it that is destroying the world. God? The devil? Aliens? Is it just the product of the main characters writing (she is a writer)?
This book was amazing. You fear for the characters. You don't understand why the horror around them is happening. My theries changed over and over again. And then you even question yourself a little. I gasped. I cried. I most certainly didn't laugh.

This is a surprisingly great science fiction book. I was expecting the usual deft horror novel Koontz writes, but this one really surprised me. It's at the top of my list, for subtle, thoughtful science fiction.

I found this book very realistic and scary. I could actually put myself in the village peoples shoes and FEEL what they were feeling and experiancing as they worried, wondered and explored options of which were very few. With time so short, this book is well worth taking the time to read it. It held me spellbound and I couldn't put it down and neither will you. I give it 5 stars!!

This story hooks you in quickly and definitely makes you start looking over your shoulder. Koontz is a master of sprinkling in clues throughout the storyline that all make sense in the end. From reading other reviewers, it seems the only people who weren't fans of the book were ones that didn't quite get it. This may be one of those books worth going back and reading a second time if you first finished confused or disappointed.

I really enjoyed the suspense and imagery of what was going on and I couldn't put the book down - until I got to the last pages. Then, to me, the story fell apart. The wrap-up was too sappy, formulaic and it left way too much unexplained in the guise of "well maybes this is what happened".

Only my second Deen Koontz. Had no idea I was gonna be scared out of my wits! Read it in two days, so it's a page turner. Me personally, I couldn't handle the sci-fi freakiness of the book, so I probably won't read anymore of Dean's.

This is my favorite of Koontz novel so far! It kept you guessing up until the very end.

The plot takes off dramatically and kept my attention with horrific circumstances and sympathetic characters. I wanted to see how they would survive and how they could overcome the devastating circumstances.

It's been a while since I read this book. It's not one of my favorites of Koontz, but kept me interested enough. It was a little too "out there" for my taste.

Freaky end of the world scenario. I thought that it took far too long to explain and the tension never really let up throughout the whole book.
Seemed like a good story but as it went along it became more and more lame. The ending was close to non-nonsensical. It seemed that the writer got to a point and then suddenly wanted to go do something else so he grabbed a premise and threw it into the ending.
Started good then by the middle it got repetitious and draggy and preachy.

More science fiction than horror. I didn't much care for the ending, but it was a good read along the way.
I thought this book was chilling and thought provoking. The story kept me captivated and I could not put it down until the very last page. I just had to know how it was going to end.

It had me so scared that I had to keep looking over my shoulder as I read it. In the book, the world is being taken over by an unbeatable "alien" force that is as sadistic as it is purely evil.

I guess it must be true, because this book began to get that "feel" to me about two thirds of the way through and, sure enough, the last chapter confirmed my suspicions. He tied the whole thing up very neatly through biblical references.
I wouldn't let that turn you off of Mr. Koontz, though, if that's not your bag. I was hooked from the first chapter. The way that everything in the world can be over turned by such beauty and mesmerizing amazement. And then slowly taken over by terror, death, suicide and murderous actions...only to leave the world with what I think as the morally right. Traversing across the country with only things you would think of in your darkest dreams and then being slowly captivated by the "new world"...where everything is as you make it. Seriously Dean Koontz at his best. I've read it at least 10 times & can not get enough!

I am a huge Koontz fan, but this one was not his best.. for those who haven't read all his books and aren't expecting better with each new book, this one may be just fine. The writing is good, the character well formed.. I just found it far too predictable and Koontz has always been anything but.

Koontz never fail to write a good book. Great storyline and the ending wasn't what I expected but it was typical Dean Koontz. This is a book I'm sure I can read again.

A strange luminous rain marks the beginning of the end of the world as they know it for Molly and Neil Sloan and their rural mountain town.
This book was very difficult to set down! It was the first novel I've read by Koontz. Since this book I have read morebooks by him, but thought that they were very predicitible compared to this one. The ending was somewhat disapointing because it comes on fast and isn't as detailed as the rest of the story.

THE TAKING is everything SIGNS should have been, but wasn't. It's eerie, compelling and believeable.

It was a really good read! I would recommend it highly!
Great all nighter by Koontz, an interesting new take on a time old idea. Wish there was more to learn at the end.
All-out thriller...
What intrigues me most about Koontz' books, this for sure is no exception, is his descriptive abilities. I could absolutely conjure the surreal scenes (hopefully never to be experienced) being built by his words on the screen of my imagination. The Taking does not have much dialogue, and is for those who enjoy having their imaginations challenged.
A slam-bang , all out Thriller... but also poignant and noble, with heroism, self-sacrifice, and redemption as the order of the day. Tightly woven, action-packed, and terrifically Suspenseful throughout. -Flint Journal
I really enjoyed this book. It was different from Koontz's past novels, it had a much quicker pace and a dark feeling.
A very interesting look at the human reaction to "the end of the world"
How weird was this book. It was good even if it was a bit apocalyptic. The ending was a bit of let down compared to how intense the rest of the book was.
The rain fell. It fell all over the world. Some survived. most did not. Follow the survivors through another kind of hell..a good beach read!!
Very different, surprise ending
Chilling, supernatural story that kept me reading (and afraid to sleep at times) to the end. The ending surprised me and made me think long after the last page - not what I expected in the least, but highly satisfying.
Though I am turned off by Koontz's seeming need to win some kind of vocabulary test...this story is terrifying. A mix of sci-fi and ancient story - it's extremely interesting. Just bring your thesaurus.

With Dean Koontz you never know what you are getting into until the middle of the book but they are always a lot of fun to read.
I own this on audio so would like to find a new home for this copy. Koontz has been one of my favorite authors for over a decade and is one of the few whose books I continue to buy. This copy is registered at bookcrossing and has bookcrossing labels inside.
I LOVE some of Koontz's books, but this was ok to me - it's kind of science fiction, aliens stuff.

Book was a little bid too weird even for Koontz. After enjoying most of Koontz earlier novels like "Watchers", this one was a real disappointment.

Great story line.....and for the most part (at least for me) unexpected ending until very near the end of the book.

Scared me 1/2 to death. If this is the wrath of God then we are in trouble.
One of my all time favorite books. I've read this about five or six times. It's one of those books that you cannot put down and when you come to the realization of what's actually happening, your mind will be blown.
T.S.Eliot, UFOs, terrafarming, lots of goop, Alien plants and animals at their yuckiest, a throughly unappealing book. Will the failed writer and the failed priest save all the children from the bad aliens and give to the good ones? Not even as interesting as that might sound, a bored in the bathtub may as well read this stupid thing while soaking book. Don't forget...if the aliens get you, you will start quoting T.S. Eliot, which is how we know for sure you are dead.
I'm not a big Stephen King fan, but my husband is. I picked this one up after he had read it & really enjoyed it! Very suspenseful and hard to put down.
Sigh - sounds like another global warming book with a twist.
